Diffrent types of yeast
In the learning stage of making spirts and I'm about to make my first wash. Can anyone explain to me the difference in yeast? I'm trying to decide which yeast to use in my wash.

That question can't be answered in one sitting, yeast is bacteria and there are many strains. Each will impart its own flavour profile.
My suggestion, go to a yeast web page like Wyeast and read about the different strains

Re: Diffrent types of yeast
actually yeast is a fungus, like a mushroom, only smaller. the best thing is try a few different yeast like bakers or bread yeast, wine yeast . iv tryed a few doz. and settled on a few depending on the time of yr. temp. wise.
today marks the dawn of a new error.

Re: Diffrent types of yeast

There are calculations you can do for optimum rates but really it's not necessary. 20 grams is a good round number for a normal Abv wash/mash. Over pitching a bit is not a bad thing. You can even round up to 2 tablespoons if using bulk like bakers yeast.M_Wag13 wrote:How do I know how much yeast to put into the wash?
Funny thing I've noticed, beer brewers quite commonly under pitch yeast, trying to save that last penny but distillers tend to way over pitch. I've seen recipes with as much as 1/4 cup of yeast in a 5 gallon batch.
