distilling cuts and multiple runs.

Post by shiner2011 »

I am very new to distilling and this may be a stupid question but I dont know the answer so here it goes:
I have a 13 gallon pot still, if on my first run i throw the foreshots and tails out, and i make all the cuts necessary, and I run it again and even run it for a third time, do I still need to throw the foreshots and tails out every time i rerun or do i get rid of the methanol and fusel oils when i throw the foreshots and tails out on my first run.
Thanks,

When you get a chance, pop over to the Welcome Center and say hello. Tell us a little about yourself, what you're hoping to distill, and so on. People can be a lot more helpful if they know a little bit more about you.

As far as your question is concerned, a lot of us do what they call a stripping run followed by a spirit run, or we do 2-3 stripping runs and combine the outputs of those into a single spirit run.

A few of us make cuts on the stripping runs and the spirit runs, but I think most of us only make cuts on the spirit run.

You really only have to make cuts once, but you can get the heads and tails a lot more compressed on the spirit run than on a stripping run, so there's less good alcohol lost that way.

Does that answer your question?

i personally keep the tails of the stripping run (down to just below 20%ABV) to include in my Spirit Runs. I believe good ethanol remains in these and can be used. They also contribute good flavors. Welcome.
