Centrifugal spinner idea
Hey all,
last time I made a whole mess of brandy I was fighting the separation of solids and liquids, the apples had turned into an apple sauce mush. It ended up taking me much longer than i'd have hoped... I was thinking I almost need a salad spinner, but a little bigger and smaller holes... At the gym they have them for swimming suits, which is what gave me the idea. They separate large amounts of liquid in short periods of time. could be really useful, but I'd hate to build it and not have it worked like im imagining...
anyone ever seen this or thought of it before? suggestions or ideas?
Happy stilling

Re: Centrifugal spinner idea
I have no idea if it has been done, or if it would work, and I'm far from an expert. I do know a bit about centrifuges though, and you would still be losing a good bit of liquid stuck to your solids. If you don't have your spinning speed finely tuned, you could lose alot of liquid, especially if its more of a mush as compared to thicker chunks.
Re: Centrifugal spinner idea
I have often thought about this but its not a big enough problem for me to act upon it. A good thought none the less. I used to work in a restaurant that had a big(maybe 10 gallon)electric salad spinner, that thing worked great for salad, not sure about something with more weight though. It was easy to clean and food safe. I'm sure with some modifications it could work. I'm not sure what the price tag on this would be but maybe find one used somewhere. Wv_hillbilly brings up a good point, probably have to do something to try to collect the remaining liquid which might make it just extra work. Good Luck
People talk about my drinking but never about my thirst.

I have a Jack LaLanne juicer and it will get a lot of juice out of carrots and apples, etc. and leave a pretty dry fiber. Might work pretty good for apple sauce mush. I've never tried it but I think it would work pretty good.

Hi, Scania truck uses a centrifugal oil filter also retrofitted to Volvo buses working for london transport but thats another story

Hi, a centrifugal filter works on the principle that all the heavy stuff is thrown out to the outer side and you take only the good stuff from the central collection point
Hope this helps

I second the idea of a juicer. They have small, high RPM centrifuges, and work with a continuous feed. The juice shops/juice bars have bigger juicers that run all day producing garbage bags full of dry fibre. The centrifuge is cone shaped so by the time the pulp flies out the top a very high percentage of the juices are extracted through the micro-holes, and they are self-cleaning because the pulp is constantly moving up the cone.

Those pivotal wash driers have even be used to do this!
But just to pull you into another direction ... why would you want to take the solids out? The only reason I can think of is because you want to distill with an electrical element in your wash.
Just from a fermentation perspective: ferment on the grain. You will get over more taste.
From a distillation process: distilling on the grain will get you over most taste. If you have an internal electrical element, you need a clear beer. If you distil on gas, you don't need that clean a wash. If on gas and with a sieve plate, put spend grains in a bag an distill on the grain.
Okay, bit off topic, but me hopes it wettens your apetite!

Wouldn't this be awesome? Only about $2,500.

i think the idea is that everything is thrown to the outter edges, and because of screens and mesh the solids won't be able to pass through, but the liquids would still be able to travel.Stainless wrote:Hi, a centrifugal filter works on the principle that all the heavy stuff is thrown out to the outer side and you take only the good stuff from the central collection point

my fear is that too fast will cause the apple sauce to come out of the screen, instead of the liquid separating....
like many of you said, not sure how well this would work on apple sauce, but that would be an easy testing material to experiment with, a worst case scenario material.
It really isn't a huge concern for me either, in the past i just racked what i could and left the sauce at the bottom. i know the wash doesn't need to be perfectly clear with gas, but i tend to enjoy it better when i filter better. usually i use the combination of a screen sieve for noodles and a t shirt.
the reason i ask about this is because i am thinking of a project for school, would need to take 120 hours of design/fabrication/testing ect.... so although its not a huge deal, it was something i had considered before.
my ideas lead me in the direction of using a keg for a pot, and have a screen with rollers on the outside that keep it centered. a simple bearing on the bottom connected to an electric motor with a pully would allow for high rpm as well as variable adjustment in RPM. i also think i could finish the whole project for under a few hundred bucks...
and i would i be able to use this for more than just apple cider? maybe if i ever get a salad bar business going? just saying...
