upgrades, keg and column.
was gonna wail till i had it all nice and shiny but i had a good idea last night i wanted to share.I'm sure it's been done before but i haven't seen it yet anyway. i made a diy valve i seen on here by chickenfeet. well i was about to extend my takeoff when a thought came. I just made a little shelf on a stick and C-clamped it to the keg.and its easy to adjust for different collectors. it's pretty ugly now but I'll fix it up.maybe a metal square with a slot and a couple wing nutts. I don't know work in progress.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
Very nice! I went a different route, and mounted my jar holder directly to the column. I guess it's adjustable, if I want to put the hose clamp over the insulation, or remove some insulation.

I like the table and the channel with some with some tapped holes to act as a clamp for adjusting would make it very functional.
I use I beam clamps that clamp onto the rim of the keg and go from there, you could probably mount a piece of channel on one of those (they have threaded hole in the middle to accept threaded rod) and then be completely adjustable.

Re: upgrades, keg and column.
Another approach could be to use a magnet base and stick it on the keg so you could just move it where you wanted

I'm pretty sure magnets do not stick to SS...

Hi, magnets won't hold it, i'm not going to get into this coz yer talking about loads of diffrnt material, and thats only in stainless and whats also called 'STAINLESS'
If you live in UK and want to be avoiding 'RIP-OFF' then 'pm' me. I can mention at least one crowd who are just ebay fleabay merchants.
If its of interest to you, pm me.
Sorry,,, totally offtopic

I like your shelf idea, but using propane, it might be wise to get your collection point away from the flame. An accidental spill would be pretty bad collecting right over the burner like that.
Anything i do or say here is purely hypothetical and for information gathering and sharing purposes only.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
sorry took so long to respond, been workin my butt off this week. every time signed on to reply i ended up crashing. yeah i thought about using the column oakback but i got lava for packing right now, it's a pain enough as it is. beauty idea butterman, both your setup and new thoughts. ( i like the tapped holes ) yeah there is some stainless that can be magnetic, 416 can be stuck to one, it rusts too though, almost wouldn't call it stainless. yeah you got a point there mr brown, but in that pic i had a grill from an old bbq holding the keg off the flames, it was a test run only had 2 gal didn't want scorching. when i take the grill out it fits right down inside the keg bottom, i think any spillage would just drip right to the patio. though i might still be re-thinking it. can't let myself get careless. well i'll get some more picks tomorrow if anybody has a mind to check em out.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
Yah, shelf idea a good idea, just be sure to not acidentally knock your collection vessel over ......
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

Re: upgrades, keg and column.
yeah if i didnt tighten it enough it was actually wabbly, ha. I've only run two gal so far in that still. i actually collected about 4 or 5 oz per 750 bottle, wasn't sure how she was gonna act. so didn't have much weight. got 15 gal of mash ready here any day, gonna have to make sure everything is good then.

I forget sarcasm doesn't come through computers, the magnet idea was a joke. I need to make better use of the smileys
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
actually it's clear as day, to me. now that you point it out. i just missed the smiley the first time.

nice. I like the way it just slaps on, and moves out of the way. The C-clamps kinda a pain. don't think i could rig it to go on as easy as yours though. i got too much hight to deal with, need somthing that grips. I'm still thinking about getting my parrot back up as well, so I got some thinkin. but I've been to preoccupied with the little things. as it's a new build there was a couple things i wanted to change after first run.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
How are you holding your lava rocks in? I plan on upgrading my column from 2" to 3" (SS), and wanted to use lava rock.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
well don't know if all kegs have it but my german style threaded keg has a little lip at the bottom. soldered a little x with left over 6 gage from my flange, cover with bit o scrubbies and viola.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
wait oakback if your going to 3" are you going to change the flange to fit? or use an adapter. then you prob wouldn't have the lip no matter what. but you could use another idea i had. pretty much the same but just drill holes just big enough for the wire at the base of your column. then solder em in. you would have to have the column at least in 2 pieces but that seams pretty common place now. i got mine from the recycling center and had to get it in 3 pieces. but i'm glad now, i think it makes life easier with lava at least. or any pore in packing for that matter.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
That's what I was thinking when I saw your pick. I wouldn't want to put that on the keg anyways, because I disconnect my column after every run, and I'd have to empty out the rocks every time.noknife wrote:wait oakback if your going to 3" are you going to change the flange to fit? or use an adapter. then you prob wouldn't have the lip no matter what. but you could use another idea i had. pretty much the same but just drill holes just big enough for the wire at the base of your column. then solder em in. you would have to have the column at least in 2 pieces but that seams pretty common place now. i got mine from the recycling center and had to get it in 3 pieces. but i'm glad now, i think it makes life easier with lava at least. or any pore in packing for that matter.
I plan on using a 2"x3" adapter (triclamp on both sides), and I could add the X on that. That way, I could leave it on while removing the column from the keg, or I can easily remove the adapter from the column to take the rocks out for cleaning.
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
there you go, good idea. right now i just funnel them into a water bottle. kind of a pain as they don't really like coming out of the column when there packed well. only done one run so far, maybe i'll think of something that would be easier
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
did a 7 gal run today. biggest so far. man that lava worked great. ( well in combo with the 2" column ) didn't work as good last run. just getting to know her i guess. today i had it cranked pretty good, going a good 5 drops a sec. and was still hitting 96.5. don't even really need it that strong so i'll really be able to bust out some runs once i get her dialed in. now that's why i upgraded my column when i got that keg
Re: upgrades, keg and column.
Very nice and congratulations starting to get it figured out :>

Re: upgrades, keg and column.
thanks butterman. I don't even think i was running my 1-1/2 right the whole time i was using it. didn't have a very hot burner. but who cares now. gonna start 15 gal of ujssm today, and try and run it in pot mode next time. i might end up making a pot still head. who knows
