Chip,

That's awesome work man, I wish i could do work like that. As,for beer... I also brew beer, I'm sipping an amber bock that just came of age. If I could share a couple with you it would ruin your taste for that other stuff. ;)

Badass!

Can't you build a pot then?? :lolno: :lolno: :lolno:
I know a guy who built a bok and flute on a navy base. Use to plug the boiler into the wall in the bathroom and turn on the exhaust fan on. Run it after working hours, once the military police had gone home.

Yes, I use a small digital/Kitchen type thermometer in there...Works great.
I have looked at some probes that hook into a fluke type meter but mine seems to work fine.

Having fun with the flute....I have been running enough wash to get three gallons of spirits, The running the spirits again at a slower rate. It makes some really nice tasting clear.. Trying to get enough to fill my 6 gallon barrell.

Does this sound about right????
I built my "Tinker Maid" flue almost exactly like hooch's,,and just love it.Here's how it goes,,I've made several runs, and it runs almost exactly the same each time.
l load the boiler with 3 5 gal buckets of was. not quite 5 gal,as need be a little shy so can hande n pour
Light the fire. usualy takes about an hr to heat up. start seeing liquid on top plate at about 95 /100 degrees f
Temps rise very fast past 100 to 140 / 150 where they settle n remain during most of run
Product comes off at around 170 proof + or -, and holds throughout most of run
I pull just shy of a quart as fores n heads, usualy about an inch or so below the neck on jar before loose the headsy smell taste
Collect almost 1/2 gal at the 170 proof, down to about 140ish when I switch out jars
Get about another pint ,,but proof falls fast,,stop at about 80 proof depending on taste / smell, save to blend mix with
Save about another pint as tails to throw in next batch,,but by now alcohol is about gone
Question is am I about where I should be?? Been running UJSSM , and a batch of rum yesterday. Not sure what i should be getting yieldwise as I'm using doughnut shoppe sugar with no accurate way to weigh

what is everyone using for a hole pattern on the plates? A 1/4" grid gives me about 90-95 depending on downcomer and cup, 3/16" grid gives me about 113-118. Any thoughts?

I too followed this thread almost to the letter when building my flute and have been running it for about 9 months now. The description of your run is about identical to the way mine runs. The only time the amount collected changes is when I experiment with different washes but the process usually stays the same.

NChooch's 3" flute build

Post by davsmth41 »

NC, is there a way to make each plate in a separate section. Like using tri cloves to attach each section. I'd like to do mine that way just for the looks. Also, would a plated flute run like a normal pot still if the deflagmenter wasn't used?

NC, did you ever run your all grain Carolina Bourbon through the flute on a single run? I'm keen to see a comparison to it being double pot stilled.

I've gone the other way and have run it on a single pass with 4 plates and aged, but am now building up stocks of double pot run stuff. Will have to wait 6 months to age that for my own comparison

@davsmth41 , yep, without a dephlagmator, the flute would work pretty close to a pot still. I think you'll find examples of segmented flutes somewhere on this site ...not in this thread tho.

@Brendan , I've never done a double run on my rig . I run it low n slow and it works really nice that way in 1 pass.
Lemme know when its ready and I'll help ya with the comparison ;)

thanks

Hey NC
Thanks for giving us such a detailed build with material list   , I read about so many builds but yours helped me the most   . I can only hope mine can turn out even close to yours :D :D
I cant find a source for the NIBCO 1-1/2 in. Copper DWV C x SJ Trap Adapter's in Canada unless I pay $46 each + shipping . I think I will just do the easy flange and tri-clamp

Hooch, love the design and the description for the build. I have read several flute build threads and will begin mine, modeled off of yours, within the next few days. I have a question about the plumbing... I notice ball valves, rather than gate valves, are used in most flutes. Is this because a ball halve gives a more visual idea of how open or closed the valve is?

gonna give this flute build a try but need to inquire about a few things first, how do you know where to layout sight glasses on a 4 plate column? I am thinking this will become more clearly to me when I get the plate stack together but I'm trying to get a rough idea first, thanks

I just started up a 3 inch flute project as well. I'm no expert yet, but your sight glass layout will depend on what type deflag you going to use and the spacing of your plates. I haven't mounted mine yet as it will be last thing I do. Hate to mess up that pretty piece of copper lol
