what do you think of this cooling idea....?

Post by drinktofabfabtodrink »

Not sure what you would call this, and i wouldnt be suprised in the slightest if there is a name and its already out there... but its hard to search through a picture....

building a new 3" BOK. for the cooler after it hits the plates (secondary cooler for product) i want to run it into this design below:

so the attachment at the top is a compression fitting, at the bottom is just a barb. everything stainless. that is a 2" pipe with caps and .5" stainless tubes. picture shows (6) - (3/8") tubes, but i will probably do (5) - (1/2") center will have in and out port for cooling water, top and bottom will let product find its way through the tubes and collect at the bottom.

happy stilling.

looks like a shotgun condenser to me. A small leibig would be simpler, cheaper and easier to build but to each their own.

I knew there would be a name for it. thanks for the lead on searching. i know its not the most simple, but with stainless i cant crank it out in a few hours max... unless i get fancy with the DRO on the mill and put the holes all perfect and such... only have to build it once!

just be cautious of the weight of that hangin off the side of your Boka

Can't say for sure as I don't have a shotgun but I'd say they are better suited to knocking down vapour than cooling liquid. It'll probly only make use of the lowest inner tube, the rest would be empty serving no purpose. ??

I think Belly has a good point, that as a secondary condenser for your condensate your design will not be using all the tubes. You might think about a air cooled coil, that would add a significant amount of secondary cooling depending on the length, or just a simple liebig.
But I know how it is to want to build things and nothing wrong with trying.

I agree that it is overkill... could probably get away with just a coil cooled by air. just thought it would be cool...

my previous idea had same tube but with a coil going through, but wanted to avoid copper and stainless soldering. not sure about only one tube getting used. most likely that will be the case for slow go - but if i use for stripping it might be a bit faster and use em all. i dont know.

it was just a thought, maybe it would be better to use somewhere else and just use a liebig or something simple for my bok.

if the output line on your Boka is 3/8" having 6 - 3/8" tubes in a shotgun inline won't speed anything up. You could make a short fat leibig with it or graham style with a single line. Your only cooling distillate that's already condensed

Your idea with "the coil going thru it" is called a Graham condenser, and would be much easier to build.
You wanted to avoid soldering...? Ok, but you will have to weld or solder the tubes going thru your shotgun condenser anyway unless you can manufacture them very accurate and press them in place.
The idea is ok  ...but i would recommend a simple Liebig.

Sorry I am a bit lacking on the terminology, almost need a dictionary to keep them all straight!

anyway, went with the graham because i had a coil.. came out alright..

I think the graham is a better choice. looks good!! Nice and compact attached to the column like that. How bout a pic of the whole setup? (not in a PDF though)

Well here's the final build
final build.jpg
just ran my vinegar through it last night, kinda strange how it turned out... may not have run vinegar long enough.. only let it go for about 30 min
inside column.jpg
first 4 inches in bottom didnt get touched, but further up it looks like it was streaking back copper juice... or whatever that is

"copper juice" good one....

probably exactly what it is, a mix of coppers and burnt flux. I'd run some more vinegar
