My First Still 15 gal Pot Stil

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

My First Still 15 gal Pot Stil

Post by Johnben »

Hey guys, recently got into distillation after making beer and other drinks. after sifting the forums and youtube i decided to go with a keg Pot-still, i had the keg laying around and milehidistilling.com had the rest, i copied a still i found with a few mods http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 50&t=26500 i put the union on the downspout on mine because i have two kegs (15gal and 5gal) and i wanted to be able to do spirit runs in the smaller keg and beer run in the 15 gal keg, so putting the unions in the downspout make it easier to change kegs with two sizes of downspouts. i also skimped out on the 3" column which so far i haven't noticed anything from it.

I am considering getting a thump keg, i made a batch of UJSM and I got 130 proof tops out of it, not sure if a thump keg would allow higher proofs (birdwatchers was 90 tops, sweet feed was 110) also i had been reading about people "packing" their columns with glass or mesh, and i had tried to shove a couple pure copper pot scrubbers inside the column but didn't notice much of a difference.

I would really like to get into all grain, malt and fruit, im not sure where to start with all that yet.

i look forward to to gaining knowledge in this hobby and hope that i can learn from the community and experience.

if you shortend up the downturn to the flake stand you wouldent have to collect off that clean floor, a little less bending over is good, just cut a foot off where the union is and add another table. the collection point seems a little close to the open flame, you dont want a misshap, you can easely extend the lynne arm a cpl ft for saftey reasons. i have mine about 4 ft away with no adverse effects on the collection rate. nice setup and good luck.
today marks the dawn of a new error.
