Im new to distilling and i have searched the site for this question but i cant find it so here goes....
I have a 13 gallon stainless pot still with copper mesh column packing, I was running a 48 hour turbo sugar wash
and for those of you that dont like to use turbo yeast i understand lol
the only reason i was using it was for a cleaning run...
anyway I ran my still very slow and got a really clear good looking output but when i checked my proof it was only 40 proof?
I know with a pot still its not gunna be real high like with a reflux still
Im just wondering does anyone know what i might have done to get this low of a proof or is this common?
Low Proof?

Re: Low Proof?
That's fairly common for a stripping run.....
Experience is what you get right after you need it.
Re: Low Proof?
40 proof? or 40% sounds better.witch is about what you git in one run.it makes some difference how you run but that's in the ballpark.
Re: Low Proof?
I'm just guessing, but I'd wager that your ferment was not done if you only went 48 hours. Mine go for 7-10 days to get 10-11%, which will yield about 50-55% pot, or 93% reflux.
Re: Low Proof?
Oh, yeah. 40 proof would be low. I misread it. You're looking in the range of 40-60% for the most part when stripping on a pot stillDnderhead wrote:40 proof? or 40% sounds better.witch is about what you git in one run.it makes some difference how you run but that's in the ballpark.

Re: Low Proof?
Im very new as well. Been studying for years but never had the opportunity. I ran my first batch and had the same problem. I dont have a hydrometer yet. But i know my mash stopped working after about 2 days where as the other buckets went for almost 2 weeks. I was just running it to kind of get the feel of how everything would work. When running it i have to remi.d myself of it quiting early. Cause i get really frustrated, fast.
The doctor says i need to drink more whiskey.
Also. I am calling myself "the doctor" now.
