Hello from Texas

Post by JackDanielsNB »

Hello from Texas. I have a few questions, but first let me introduce myself. My given name is Glenn. As from my handle, I guess you could say my favorite drink is Jack Daniels. I have used a JD in my handle on the Internet for about 15+ years.

(to the Mods, in my posting, if I break some rule, please delete, edit, etc. As if I would need to give you permission. Lol)

I am retired and have plenty of time to play around with hobbies. My family, on my Dad’s side, is from Mississippi and was the area of our “moonshine” suppliers. It was easy to get until the late 80’s, harder in 90’s and impossible to find now.

I have thought about getting into this for years, but started being more active in research the last 6-9 months. I just want a small unit for myself. I have a cousin that made a small stainless steel 5 gallon pot, which we agreed on a price for my purchase. He decided to keep his and make it larger, so I am now searching for equipment. This forum has been very helpful to me for gaining knowledge so I can make informed decisions. This forum has been very helpful to me for gaining knowledge to the point I am confused. Lol.

I was fairly sure I wanted a pot, but now, with all my “knowledge”, I am unsure of which style I want. Yes, I want a pot, and from what I understand, I want the flavor that is associated with a pot. If I understand correctly, I can also do several runs to get to a product that is similar to what a flux would produce. Yes, it would be more work with a pot to get this product, but I would like to start doing something close to what I grew up on. Yes, I still have lots of searching of this forum for more knowledge to help get there.

Here’s my question. I plan to start with 5 gallon batches, so I am looking for a pot in the 5-10 gallon range. I have the time, skills and shop to build my own, and will in the future. But, I want to start with a “one stop vendor” so to speak. I want to make one call and get everything I need to start. I have looked around this forum for opinions, or reviews, of “store bought” units with no success. I did read a post about visiting the forum sponsors, but can’t find any links. I did read a post about accepting revenue from vendors, but couldn't find if it went further. Is there somewhere on this forum where I can get more info on what is available for sale and who is the honest vendors? (I forgot to add this above, but this will be an outdoor unit with a propane heat source.) Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Jack Daniels

Welcome JD  I built mt own pot still so I can't help on the right vendor to buy one.

If you got the time you might want to consider building your own. It can be way less expensive.
The only barrier to truth is the assumption you already have it

Hey JD. I like jbird built my own withbthe knowledge shared by everybody on this site. There a lots of threads about different members who use the "store bought" stills that you are referring to. Hillbilly stills makes nice copper stills if thats what youre after and they are American made and assembled. I have personally used Mile Hi for some clamps gaskets and adapters and they were awesome. I havent heard a lot about brewhaus but they have some towers boilers and accessories. Do a search with some of those vendors thru the site and see what you get. I guarantee youll find something.
