Whole Kernel Corn -- Where to get?

Post by efyl »

Hi, I'm pretty new to this world. I'd like to start by learning to sprout the corn. A friend gave me some organic corn that was feed corn. However, I found only about 20% of the kernels sprouted across several batches. I soaked it for a day and then kept it in a dark (not air-tight container) and rinsed it once daily. The rest then began to mold and rot and spoiled it all. Any suggestions on where to buy whole kernel corn and what types are more likely to sprout? Thanks.

Have you used a particular brand that works? Are you finding that most of your corns germinate? Thanks.

I get mine from some of the fields we lease for dove hunts. I pick up a dozen or so ears every hunt. Since some that I've picked up were wet and soggy, they'd already begun malting. I'm going to bury a sack beneath a pile of horse manure for a week or so and see how that goes. I'm certain it'll do what all the guys say it will.

If it started molding, that probably didn't have anything to do with the kernels you used. Probably needed turned and rinsed more often or it needed more air getting to it.

I was rinsing and turning mine 2-3 times a day to avoid mold. Then I had to leave town before it was done and it got ruined. Going to try another batch once baseball season is over and I have more time.

You can find white corn (the best for whiskeys) at a Mexican market. It is used to make totillas and not treated with chemicals.
Soak the corn for 36 to 40 hours in a bucket or pot and change water 3 times a day then put corn in a grain bag, plastic one from the market where you bought the grain or a feed store. Fill it with no more than 30 lbs. rinse and let it drain 3 times a day. It will sprout within 3 days. If it doesn't sprout, you have old corn. I do lots of it this way and I never have had a mold problem. You should get a minum of 80% to sprout or something is wrong. Dry and store it. Grind it a day or less, before you make your wash.
