Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Made a 2nd molasses wash. Used a gallon of the last wash to keep the yeast going from that batch. Diluted molasses down to 1.070, added DAP, nutes ,etc & let 'er sit.
The first wash SG started at 1.07, finished at 1.005. Does that sound right? This was my first time with molasses. It started out almost black, finished dark brown. I used a fancy grade molasses.

Made a chocolate cherry bourbon oaked lambic beer. It wont be ready to drink until XMAS. West Flanders Belgian ale strain, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus bacterias. Yes, its a tad sour. 5 lbs of Montmorency cherries off my tree last year (frozen) will be pasterurized to 170 and added in 5 days after the brunt of the fermentation is over (to avoid all the bubbling carrying away the cherry flavors). In 6 months, Ill add some bourbon barrel oak cubes. At xmas I'll be pouring pints.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I was gifted 50lbs of a a 1:1 sugar & cornmeal mix so I mashed up 30lbs of the mix with 12lbs of 2-Row and 5lbs of flaked rye over the weekend. It's not near enough malt to convert it all(AFAIK) but the sugar will ensure the yeast have something to chew on. I'm curious to see how this compares to 4th generation UJSM after all is said and done.
I put all the cornmeal and rye into a boil bag and steeped it in boiling water for about an hour then dumped all that into a cooler mashtun overnight. In the morning I left the top of the cooler open for a bit to let some heat out and added the malt to the bag and closed the cooler. Didn't do an iodine test but I've got 30 gallons of 1.065 mash there must have been some conversion I guess!

Running gen 2 of my hook rum right now. Started at 70% and gonna run it down to 20%. Collecting in about 200-250 ml increments and I'm on jar 13. Jar 11 was still 60%!
If someone suggests you do some research. Don't think of it as an insult, consider it a challenge.

Stripping some banana rum right now. Got some apple rum almost ready for the still. Got a batch of All-Bran that's a few days away from completion. Also got a few single-gallon experimentals going... I'm staying busy.

I have a very assertive way. It's wake up, move your ass, or piss off home.

Bogey, I like your organization there. My area is never that organized. The only way I can tell my jars apart is the number written on the top of each coffee filter.Bogey wrote:Just finished up a Panela stripping run, followed up by a spirit run. I am kidding you not: I am making a TURBO! Yes, really, I am. Why? Because I am about to get a new rig in. For testing. Testing for automated cuts handling. What better to use than a turbo, right?

Gonna try a Tater's fruit /berry recipe. I can't decide whether to use peaches or plums.

I just calculated its HETP and devided that on the height of the column. Two centimeters for HETP equals a total of 60 (!) re-distillation cycles. That should clean anything up!

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
haha, So you intentionally created a crap turbo wash to test its abilities? Thats funny. It does look like a formidable neutral making machine! I have a test for it, some of this bourbon that went pukey. If that baby cleans up some butrytis Im sold!Odin wrote:I just calculated its HETP and devided that on the height of the column. Somehow I will be disappointed if it doesn't clean up pretty much anything!
Yep, I made the turbo crap to test the shit out of it.

Made 25gallons of a mostly corn wash. Which is the 5th/6th batch of a Wheated Bourbon bill, hopefully destined for a small barrel(5gallons), maybe ready for Xmas presents.
Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I've decided with using peaches for Tater's Fruit Wash and later this afternoon I'm going to run a Rad's Allbran with raisins with is ready. i can't wait to taste it , first time using Allbran with raisins.

Stripping runs on a Wheated bourbon recipe, once finished I will post. Almost have enough stripping runs runs(11gallons 70 proof) to fill the keg and run off and fill a 5 gallon barrel!

Love that smell. If I could turn that into food and eat it with a piece of bacon and a glass of Bourbon I'd be in frickin' HEAVEN!!Black Eye wrote:I'm 7 jars into some fine corn whiskey while enjoying the sun with the old lady and the dog. I haven't but I might now. I figured I would use an unused piece of 1/4" copper tubing and drink it straight from the barrel!!jimdo64 wrote:Very nice Marley! didja git one of them glass wine thiefs yet? Jimdo do you use the mesh bags for all your grain?? I was having a hard time draining from my 45gallon Igloo. I ended up filling a single bag repeatedly and squeezing it out. I was thinking since I was running 25gallons of water and 50lbs of grain that I might divide up all the grain into separate bags(I bought like 15 bags) and see how it comes out that way. 50 pounds of wet grain is a hot effin mess!! It would be easier to squeeze out 15 bags dump the grain and be finished. Don't want to hijack this topic, but since you mentioned it and it was on my mind....
Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Hey rasta man, funny you should ask, I just wrote up on it yesterday in this thread. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 0#p7078913 25 lbs of grain squeezes out pretty quick. But not 15 lbs at a time. The goop gets thicker and thicker as you work your way down in the barrel, so the amount you scoop into the bag changes as you go, but I shoot for a ball slightly larger than a softball after the goodies are squeezed out. Yesterday my losses averages 7.68 ounces liquid per lb of grain. Last time 7.7. haha. Id say thats consistent. It helps me know how much to ferment for a 10-12 gallon stripping run.onemarleyfan wrote:

PS: Yes, I ferment on the grain for all whiskies. For beer I have a false bottom cooler and double batch sparge.

Ran the wheated bourbon mentioned below, stripping run. And rehydrated the 25 lbs of spent grains with 16 lbs of sugar melted in 10 gallons water + 2 gallons backset. Workin in the yard and on the car most of the day otherwise. Back is killin me, time to sit on my ass with 3 fingers of something good.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Finally transferred my Birdwatchers to demijohns for clearing and put another one on top of the yeast cake, just need it to clear and I can do my first proper stripping run.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
Pitched yeast on another batch of wheated bourbon, the one I wrote up this recipe on couple days ago. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 7#p7082872 When its done Ill do another Gumballhead with the spent grain like in the recipe.
This time I used WLP023 Burton Ale Yeast. Its a fruity english strain to compliment the fruity earthiness of the wheat.

... and since there's no point hanging on to a third a bag of corn, I did another, like below. So 2 barrels bubblin now. 2 strippers and a spirit run in a week or so. With any luck I'll have enough wheated bourbon to fill a barrel now with these and the last batches. I hope, lest that feed store will get another visit right shortly.
