White Oak Sticks

Post by Shiner »

I have done many searches online for these critters, but have come up empty. I've also read here till my butt is sore about using the sticks, but never came across a source for buying them. I have all the tools to make my own if I could find some of correct oak. We've got white oak on the property, but not sure if it's the right stuff being on the west coast.

Where are you folks getting these sticks? I'm anxious to try some.

You got white oak on the property....
You have all the nessasary tools to make it...
You're asking where to get white oak sticks....

Leave all the tools in the shed.... Go to HD and buy a hatchet(chainsaws too easy and produces too make use full saw dust particles)

Trek out to the property, mark 100 white oak seedlings then devide by 0 and decide on the shortest thinnest white oak ya got!!

Chop it down, skin it chop it more, repeat till u have nice sticks.

Grill steaks for dinner, use charcoal on the rack place your steaks then fill the rest of the space with white oaks sticks,
Turn sticks when steaks are done. Leave over night tomorrow for breakfast find your perfectly seasoned oak sticks.

Final Step!! Email me for mailing address to send samples :-D

Ill bellyache for you for using the propane torch winch won't matter if you let em air. Have you tasted them lately?

You should sample every 6ish months

My reason for asking is that, from what I've read around here, I should be using 'American White oak', be it sticks or casks. Most of the moonshining originated back east from the pacific northwest were I live and wanted to be sure that I was using the correct "White Oak" There could be a completely different variety back there than what I've got and didn't want to stick something in my likker after all the work I've put in to it and send it in the wrong direction.

Somewhere I read that the sticks should be made from the heart wood. Any truth to that?

Yes, you should use the heartwood. I made some sticks last year out of a fallen plum tree. White oak or fruit trees are all suitable. I wrap them in foil and put on BBQ as Lucent suggests but usually do it when cooking fish so I get the most out of my propane. Using the oven works but you better have an understanding wife as it will smell up the whole house.

Below is a picture of different levels of toasting.

Thanks Rastus. I had found that earlier, but don't have an ebay account. Looks like a good reason to open one.

I did do some research on "American White Oak" and found that the white oak that's been used traditionally over time is grown from about the Mississipi River area to the Atlantic coast, not being the same that grows out here in my parts. What the difference is...I'm not sure. I'm just looking to find the traditional oak. There's gotta be a reason why they've always used it over others.

Thanks all for your input. Always appreciated.

you betcha bye golly.

I ordered twice already from him in winter the price was higher but he stated the price would go down in spring and it did. leaves more time for me to work on other stuff... so i figure i will bye up some more this summer. i couldnt figure weather to use toasted or charred, so i just mix it 50/50 in heavy doses, shake the stuff a lot and once they get to where it smells and tastes good... i pour it through the coffee filters a few times. then i leave a little liquid in a jar and leave the wood in that sealed tight keeps it moist, and next round, the wood is primed with moisture already.. gets to working faster than starting off with dried out wood. works for me.

good luck

You members near the southern part of Virginia, a year ago I toured Colonial Williamsburg and inside they have historical demonstrations. One of the demonstration was making tools the traditional way by hand. They used white oak and as they used hand planers and hand saws they had a huge collection of waste material that they just got rid of. I was tempted to ask if they would sell and ship but decided against it. You might see if you live in the area if you could pick it up. It was really beautiful looking wood.

I know it seems crazy,
i have to order all my stuff and pay shipping for it all. aint no supply shop, wood shop, tractor store, or brewing supply shop around these parts for 5 or 6 hundred miles, and i cant use willow or spruce.
i ordered chips from a brew place, didnt like the result. so i tried these, they worked and didnt see anything else like it available, goes a long way, so i got what i need.
its kinda like if you live in a dry county the price of likker cost more. but you do what you gotta do 8)

Nice. Makes me feel like a sucker for paying full price for mine.

I then sand staves down as needed, cut them up, and rechar them. They work great.

Don't know how you guys feel about wine barrel for making your own oak sticks, but I just found a deal in some. $20 with free shipping on ebay. However... should these not be available I found a place called barreldreams online. They sell staves, chunks, chips, and all manner of assorted items. May be worth a look see for some. Enjoy! :)
