Has any one one ever had any great luck smoking, soaked, cracked corn, before making a sugar head wash? Was just day dreaming and thunk about it?

I have. Ive smoked cracked corn and sprouted corn. I have an outdoor meat smoker and I sent away for a alb bag of peat direct from Scotland (its used to throw in a fire for a nice smell) I made sure the corn was soaked and spread it on a window screen and laid that in the smoker. I even went a step further and placed 2 gallons of water in a bowl and placed that in the smoker as well after I was finished with the grain. Works great

I smoked about 8-10 pounds of corn after finishing smoking my thanksgiving turkey in my BBQ pit with pecan wood. I then used it with sugar and did a UJSSM type wash.

The wash had a great flavor but my buddy never had a good time to run it. That's why I built my own. Now I run on my own schedule.

Like I said. The wash had a great flavor but I never got to see how it was distilled. Just another project on my to do list now. Let us know how yours turns out.

I too am curious as to how this turned out. Also, fatman, check this thread out, it is related to what you are experimenting with:

M.B. Rowland does a smoked corn whiskey. Call it "Black Dog." It is very good--forgot to ask them what wood they use. Flavor reminds one of a barbecue.
Fatman . . how did yours come out?

Fatman, I know it's only been a month or so since the last post, but I'm interested to learn how this turned out.

I smoke my malted corn to dry it out for storage. I put it in a colander that sits in my smoker. Choose your woods and have at it. Comes through in the final product both in taste and aroma. All of my recipes have a level of smoke to them. One of them has all the ingredients smoked including the sweet feed and barley.

My last all grain run I did back in April I used my smoker to gel my corn. Put cracked corn in foil pans about half full then topped off with water. The corn will expand a lot as it gels so be sure to leave room in the pan.

Barbecued the corn for hours, don't recall exactly how long, but the temp varied plenty. Since I wasn't concerned with scorching I just added wood and water every now and again as I took care of chores and honey do list.

About halfway through the process I covered in foil to avoid the smoke flavor becoming too powerful but not sure if it made much difference.

Once it gelled I threw it in my stock pot. Added boiling Backset and water. Cooked a bit longer to make sure it was thoroughly gelled. Then mashed with malted wheat and 2 row. Think my ratio was 65% smoked cracked corn, 25% 2 row and 10% wheat.

The end result had a nice smokey flavor. Looking forward to running this recipe three or for more times to combine for a nice spirit run and put it on oak.

Too busy with baseball and lake time over the summer to do any distilling.

Was definitely easier than constant stirring to prevent scorching in my stock pot though.
