Ultrasonic cleaner experiment-Heads cleaning

Post by BentJar »

I have been reading on some of the Swedish sites about aging spirits with JD chips, and removing fore's with an ultrasonic cleaning machine.
So, since I had one I use for cleaning pocket watches, I been playing around with it. (Branson 2200)
Experimenting with cleaning up early heads from the still.
I placed 2 pints of 70% early heads in the machine, sitting in water, lids off and run it for 4 hours, the spirits reach 130 deg. and appears to be boiling but isn't. Bubbles and vapor come up from the bottom of the jars. Strong smelling and eye burning vapors.
At first, the spirits had a lip and gum burn to them but after the run in the ultrasonic, the burn was gone so I mixed me up a sip with water and damn.....they were clean and very favorable, sweet tasting. About a 2 oz. shot from each jar evaporated.

We know that heads are a mixture of fore's and hearts so this seems to be removing or evaporating the fore's and leaving the hearts.

Im going to work with it some more and will report my findings.
