why high abv from pot stills?

Post by Swifty »

Good morning.

I have been doing a lot of reading to find an answer to a question. Short n sweet, why are people wanting high abv out of pot stills?

I've read in the aging forums that a lot of people like to cask around 55% which should be easy even without a thumper; I've read that drinking > 130 proof can actually kill cells in your mouth and throat; and pot stills are not really for the high abv clears.

All of this makes me wonder what I am missing.

Thanks in advance,

if you have a 10% wash, the product will start at 55% but as you progress it drops to? so this makes the average much lower.say you have a wash of 10% then take it off to 20% thats a average of 37% ,or thats what your product will be.

Also, when people get high ABV out of a potstill, by doing 2 runs. Its for flavor reasons not to jack the ABV. Brandy I think is best with a single run. Grain whiskeys I prefer 2 run, just taste better, but then its gotta be watered down to age at 55-60% (best % for reaction with the sugars in oak)
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

with the new "ALL INFORITIVE" television shows out now everyone wants to make "free" booze cheaper than they can buy in stores IE pot still is cheapest to build and run and they think the higher the ABV the better it it

also oaking is best done at around 60% after a single run by the time you make cuts and blend it back its hard to come up with anything higher than 50% in a pot still. doing a spirit run gets the abv high enough to oak
This is kind of embarrassing but sometimes I like to smell my own backset

Great feedback guys. Thanks for giving some reasons for the extra effort.

This craft is a trip. About the time I think I can draw a conclusion, I find that I have a ton to learn..
