funny ad, and a question
Saw this ad and it cracked me up. Vintage 1962 Fleishmans ad. Look on her face is hilarious, crack that bottle BIG boy and Im all yours.....
But check the fine print at the bottom. 65% GNS? WTF? Blended whiskey. Blended with GNS neutral. Was that common? Is it still? Only on cheaper whiskies I guess?

In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.

was and is common.and no not just the cheep stuff. if it says "blended" it most likely has some neutral.

Re: funny ad, and a question
so if they make the grain neutral spirit out of grain why take it all the way to neutral only to add it back to whiskey again. Is it so they don't have to age that part of it?

I was wondering about this as well...almost sounded like double talk.so if they make the grain neutral spirit out of grain why take it all the way to neutral only to add it back to whiskey again. Is it so they don't have to age that part of it?

Re: funny ad, and a question
And all this time I though blended meant that they were blending different barrels from different mashes to get a certain flavor profile. I wouldn't have expected GNS as part of the blend.

"they were blending different barrels from different mashes "
that's "vatted" witch is mixing the same type/similar whiskeys from the same or other distilleries.
blending is mixing diferant whiskeys /alcohols.

Re: funny ad, and a question
Thanks for clarification. Alcohol in general seemed so simple a few years ago when I just put my money on the counter and walked out with a bottle. After spending time making it and reading about making it, it really is an art.

I don't know why that picture looks so old. That's me bringing up what I distilled in the barn today and my wife was saying "Hell yea! That's my man!"

Re: funny ad, and a question
'Blended' apparently has many meanings. Blended Scotch whiskey is blended from different distilleries and different batches. But ALWAYS whiskey. For example Chivas 12 Year 'Blended' Whiskey is blended from various 12 year old whiskeys. Johnny Walker Black is "..blended from about 40 whiskies, each aged at least 12 years."
Where's Lampshade, haha, we need better definitions for these words.

Re: funny ad, and a question
I thank "blended " just means "mixed" no specs on what..
Blended whisky
Blended whiskies are produced by mixing different types of whisky together. These whiskies can be single malts (made from 100% malted barley) and other whiskies that are made using alternative grains (most commonly wheat). These often come from more than one distillery and are of differing ages. The whiskies are blended together to create a smoother, more complex drink with each part bringing its own characteristics to the blend. Each brand has its own distinct and traditional recipe that is adherred to. Some blended whisky can contain over 50 different single malt and grain whiskies combined together.
Grain whisky are much cheaper to produce than single malts, as the raw materials are more readily available and less expensive than barley. The costs are also reduced as they are produced continuously, rather than in small batches like single malts. These grain whiskies have always been used in blends as a foundation, with the single malts being used as 'accents'. As a rule, the more grain whisky, young whisky in the final product, the cheaper the price to the consumer.
Vatted whisky
Vatted whiskies are also produced by mixing different types of whisky together. However, in this case only a mix of single malts are used. These whiskies may be from the same or different distilleries, have been matured in different types of cask and be of differing ages. A vatted whisky can by definition therefore contain just two differing whiskies, but commonly contain more. Therefore an easy way to remember the difference between the two is - blends are a combination of different single malts AND grain whiskies, while vattings are a combination of different single malts.

Re: funny ad, and a question
Down at the bottom right, there is a little note: "Found in Mom's basement." What does that mean?
Maybe the ad is directed at women, maybe mothers. The woman in the ad is delighted to see the guy with the big bottle. Back in 62, did mothers keep their bottles in the basement?

'Found in Moms Basement' is just the website that originally posted it, they tagged it I guess.

Re: funny ad, and a question

65% GNS so this stuff is basically 65% vodka then. No doubt some caramel coloring added to make up for the watered down oak color. I wonder if they 'blend' in some fake oak flavoring too? Yum.

Fleischmanns is pretty much bottom shelf stuff. GNS allows them to sell very cheap. Big ole hangover in a bottle
