Friend in India told me sometimes whole villages (about 100-150 people) die from drinking illegal likker made with truck radiators, etc..ie., glycol posioning. When I tole him what a shame it was...he wagged his head side-to-side and said...."this is just "rounnnding off error in India". He told me it happens all the time.

You know, when I was there a bunch of us put in an order for some bootleg likker. Our choices were clear and brown and both tasted exactly the same. That I remember 'cause even then I thought it was strange that both tasted the same.

This was a lifetime ago but every time I read something like this, I thank my lucky charms I wasn't a part of a news story. Or that I could have gone blind and lived up to my handle

Yes..I recall talking to one gentleman from India who told me the "best" likker (country likker) was the very first few drops that came out...undiluted.

I recall complaining one day to him about how crowded the train was....he said "Crowded? This is not crowded. I show you a crowded train" (ie., with people hanging off it...literally).

While working in Nigeria, most of the import beer had formaldehyde added as a preservative and we were advised to buy the bottle and break the seal while drinking in bars. I was told adding rubbing alcohol to shine was normal, occasionally someone would get carried away with it a kill some folks. Tough place to get a "safe" buzz and Smuggler's rum (rough, headsy, dark and light taste the same) was usually the only game in town.

I've been making grappa for over a decade, not removing seeds and stalks is just plain lazy unless the end product really is for fuel. I'm picking it was a chain of errors that led to this. The coroner's report will be interesting.

Sorry to resurrect a really old post but I have just read the whole thing and it remained unclear what had caused the homebrew to be poisonous (which worried me). So I have researched it and for anyone reading this in future, the issue was that the homebrew had *weedkiller* added to it by mistake.

So this was a truly appalling tragedy but anyone reading this thread should feel reassured that making grappa with normal ingredients is safe. Might be worth amending the opening post (if that is possible) to avoid causing unnecessary worry.

Yeah like most Aussie MSM stories it starts its investigation with a conclusion driven by an agenda and has more holes than chicken wire.
To my knowledge these guys made biodiesel and bought in industrial methanol for that purpose. I don't think they even had a still although some reports did have pictures of some that were blatantly lifted from the net. The final police report the way I read it was the boy's were poisoned with industrial methol so it would seem to me this is a tragic case of negligence born of ignorance.
