VM/LM design questions

Post by midwest shinner »

So I've changed my design for my reflux column I am building now a number of times, but think I've finally settled on a vm/lm set up. I have been looking around at loads of peoples' stills and all the different designs and obviously there's many, many ways to skin a cat. I am likely going to use a boka design for the lm portion of my still and was just wondering is the easiest/best way to do this to simply put a boka head over a vm take off? If so how far above the take-off should the bottom plate be? Obviously I don't want to interfere with the vm function of the still and have heard you don't want the relux coil too high above the vm tee, but am not sure how the LM portion will affect that.Or is there a different LM/VM design someone prefers? As I said I've seen a lot of different configurations and am just looking for some feedback based on peoples' experiences. This is my first reflux column so while I understand a lot of the theory, I don't have any real practical experience. By the way I will be working with 2" for the column as that's what I have along with some 1" and 1/2" laying around. Also, I won't just be using this column for neutral, I'd like to try out Ian Smiley/ Odin's method for making "pure" whisky so may also want some way to collect tails.I've read the Compleat Distiller and they suggest(for tails collection on a VM) to add a tee instead of elbow to the product condensor and a valve above that with another condensor above that as a way of collecting tails, but I have some doubts about that modification and how well it would function. Anyway, I appreciate any help or feedback on this. Cheers!
