Ran into a problem today and have a question

Post by Jasonr »

I was running 12g of mash and after about 2.5g of good product, I ran out of propane in my tank. Can I refill the tank and continue from where I left of or what other options do I have? Thanks in advance. I have t had this happen just yet.

The short answer is Yes... Refill your propane tank, bring the boiler back up to temps and continue... :)

On a safety note , might not hurt to pull off foreshot when you fire back up .

I'm not a pot still guy but you may be running out of ethno.
12g @ say 10% = 1.2g @ 100%abv or 2.4g @50%abv
Depending on you initial wash % and % of what you took off
It may not be worth the gas to reheat.
What goes up must come down, but a condenser helps

I just reread this post after reading other replies . I misread the op . Thought you ran out of gas on a 12 gal run after recovering 2.5 quart . If it was 2.5 gal recovered I wouldn't bother in reheating . Ya done got most of the good out of that wash .

You ran a 12g wash and got 2.5g good product? Define good product? Good is hearts with some mixed in from both ends to achieve a product you like. Or one end, or not at all.
How did you get 30% out of that wash?

Have you read up on cuts yet? If you didn't collect in small increments to make cuts and drink what you have you just might get the worst hangover you have ever had Unless you intend to re run what you collected in a spirit run.

I don't think there is much alcohol left in that pot either it might be disappointing to fire it up again.

He got 2.5 gallons because it wasn't at 95%...
A 12 gallon, 10% wash through a pot still will render 2.5 gallons or more at less than 50%...
You already got all the ethanol.

I collect in 12oz incraments to help make the cuts.
I didn't have time to run anymore this weekend so I just dumped what was in there.

I ended up keeping the 2.5g and it ended up at 145 proof.

2.5 g @ 72.5% alcohol out of 12 gals after making cuts? Could you explain your methods better?
What was the OG of your mash/wash? What was the FG? Turbo yeast? How many ounces of fores, heads and tails did you collect? 12gals of a 20% wash would get you 2.4 gals of uncut product @ 100abv. Strikes me as a high % if you made good cuts. Must have been in the ballpark of 15%? Without cuts.

SG was at .995
This was a simple sugar wash.

I don't use turbo, I don't like the harsh taste it gives. I use a distillers yeast.

Fermented for 9 days and after the run, let all the jars sit and air out covered with paper towel for 2 days. Makes it easier to make the cuts plus it does let me get the most out of the heads and tails. All foreshots were discarded into my bond fire starting jar haha.

I got 17 12oz jars of hearts. On the 18th I started getting into faint smells of the tails. I did use more tails and 12-18oz of heads on this run because I was making a peach cobbler so much of the bitter taste of the tails was going to be gone with the peaches. Plus with such a small amount of heads compared to the amount of hearts, it isn't noticed.

I began collecting, at 178*, tossed everything I collected before that and when I started to get to the tails my still temp was 198*

I'm sure there are still ways for me to improve my runs but I don't drink anything clear. It's always mixed into apple pie, peach cobbler or key lime pie so like I said before, there isn't any noticeable harsh taste from the heads or tails.

Jasonr...you did good. The more selective your cuts, the better the product and the fewer headaches.

By choice or accident you did a good job getting the most from the run. How you cut and mix is all about your taste!

The more you run this still and wash, the more you'll know about what is normal for you.

I really want to learn how to make a better mash to get a even better end result. Since it's all mixed it really doesn't matter I guess but I'd still like to improve where I can.
