just stopped to say hello

Post by grantskii »

First post been a lurker for awhile. I've read the parent site and required reading. I cannot stop reading love learning. I'm watching my gerber work away in a 6gal carboy. Its like a homemade lava lamp. Gonna run it in a keg boiler with a mile high cm head packed with copper. Next step is to build a boka. Over a propane fire. Thanks to the guys that have compiled all the information here

I wanna ask a bunch of questions like is there an acceptable type of glass for sights. But I don't wish to be rebuked for asking a stupid question. I'm thinking a boka with a sight glass above the bottom plate. But I also like the boka with the double wall that goes almost to the top. Still would like a glass to see what is going on in there. I am easily fascinated by the mechanics of how stuff works

I don't know much about bokas, but seems I remember there's only about an inch or less of space between the two plates - would have to be a very small sight glass.

Just sayin',

Well I'm thinking above the bottom plate but in the side of the collum you would be looking over the bottom plate and at the back of the upper. Takeoff right under the glass

Well if your going to pop in a glass, that is a nice access hole to improve the plates. By which I mean address the drainage. That bottom plate wants to drip in the packing, but the drawings I see are not doing it right. You could actually fit a pipe near the top edge of the plate to take the fluid off to the right place. Make sense?

Copper fittings are often socketed so the pipe don't slip through. Maybe this could hold your glass. A 20mm bit of glass in a 22mm socket would be loose, allowing a wrap of ptfe round it to seal. Expansion rates might stop this in it's tracks, but maybe your happy with a slightly loose fit and some flour paste for the authentic shiner feel. A socked fitting could easily be cut down to size and soldered to the column

Pyrex is never bad almost anything lab grade would be okay. As for the scrubbers hold a lighter to that shit and see what you will be drinking from it, I wouldn't use it not even the crap they try to pass off as 99% pure.

Tempered is the same thing they use in oven doors.

You guys are funny. Pyrex is a brand. Im also unsure about the brass on that one. I dont see any references to its source or quality.

Get borosillicate, or other similar glass. Its chemically tempered to resist thermal shock.
The cermaic stuff interests me greatly, and deserves some research...

It's borosilicate not borosillicate.

Yes it is. Kudos. I have poor literacy skills.

Anyways there are several manufactures that will make the exact piece you need, affordably. Like one above. There are many options like an engraving, beveled edges, polished edges, size, shape, type, thickness..ect Plus there is a price break for every additional piece. Thats awesome.

They can also advise you also to what kind of glass to use, and what thickness according to your application. (The safety charts go by tempeture, and pressure ratings). There is other safety data available as well.

Nothing wrong with prefab like evilpea suggested. Lots of options there. Be cautious of the seals they use however....most I see are red silicone. If it were me, I would try a stainless steel tri clamp fitting and wrap the glass edge in pure ptfe compressable seal maker. (There are other ways using ptfe). Its safe, less than 100$, removable, and the diy involved sells me.

I almost didn't post it when I seen that it said brass, but if you look closely at it, the glass looks to seat directly to the suspected piece of copper tube and the brass is on the out side of the copper tube then the glass is pinched between the copper inside and the brass ring outside where there will be no liquid contact.

Perfect. Id say that's a great option for some folks :)

Ive thought about boka sight glasses alot, and it just doesnt make sense to me. Snazzy idea though.
If you make something work, I would LOVE to see it.

Odin made a glass boka, no joke. Try a glass boka head if your that kind of handy. I believe Odin had some professional resources he used during the build.

I'm with you on that one, myself I would love to throw some marbles in this and attach it to a rig.
