if you can't start up a distillery, make DIY kits. This sounds too easy.

Re: homade gin
Funny you should post on this, my sister, knowing my hobby, thought it would be a great christmas gift. I have already done it. Wonder if I should post my review here or under "Resources and Reviews"?

Re: homade gin
Two 1 liter glass bottles with ceramic swing-bale caps: Wholesale $3.00 each= $6.00
Tin of Juniper Berries: Just a guess = $4.00
Packet of some secret recipe of spices: Again, just a guess = $2.00
Packaging: Being generous = $3.00
Total: $15.00
Sell to Yuppie morons for $50.00 = $35.00 apiece in your pocket = a bunch of money to lease warehouse space, pay for an alcohol distributors license, and maybe enough extra to live high on the hog for a while. .....at least until the fad dies out and the whole thing collapses under its own weight.

Re: homade gin
Fifty dollars PLUS the cost of that neutral alcohol (2 bottles?) they were talking about. So, another 25 to 30 dollars. For 75 to 80 dollars couldn't you buy a few bottles of some pretty decent gin at the (forgive me) liquor store?

Well , shucks , ya can't blame them for trying to make money
The place to put the blame is on the foolish people with disposable income that seek an easy way out rather than figger things out like we have . Those people could be cluttering up this site instead of making those two guys wealthy . Think about it .....................

Re: homade gin
it is a lot like the "age your own whiskey" I have seen by Woodinville. You buy a small charred barrel and 2 bottles of legal white dog in a kit. Pout it in and wait until you like it to drink. I don't know how successful that became, I have never heard of anyone that bought it. they charge $150.00.
But it seems these guy are making easy money with the gin thing, for now at least.

Sorry that your feel that my sister is a yuppie moron, glad to know that you have met her.Soggy Bottom Boy wrote: Sell to Yuppie morons for $50.00 = $35.00 apiece in your pocket = a bunch of money to lease warehouse space, pay for an alcohol distributors license, and maybe enough extra to live high on the hog for a while. .....at least until the fad dies out and the whole thing collapses under its own weight.
No reason to put people down to make yourself feel better. She bought it as a present for me, know my hobby and thinking that this something that would be great for me. No, she doesn't sit on this forum all day like most of us reading and had no idea what she was buying. That is basically what these people are marketing to, the uneducate (as far as making alcohol) people out there, who are afraid to "break" the law.
I got it, so I figured I would use it to see if it produced anything that was great. Answer - not really, which is what I expected. Too much botanicals for a 750ml bottle of nuetral, over powering cardamon and anise. Reused the botanicals, using the remainin 1.75 of vodka I had and then blended it all together. Made it much more drinkable, but not great. Wouldn't buy it myself and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I can make my own much cheaper and tailored around flavors I enjoy.
Sorry for the rant, just feel you were too quick to judge others.

No, I have not met her, and I didn't mean to insinuate that your sister, in particular, is a "yuppie moron", and I suppose that I could have worded my comment differently. Please, accept my apology, I did not mean to offend anyone here.YukonJack wrote:

I was merely implying that this is the marketing strategy, or customer demographic that they are targeting to make their enterprise work to their advantage. The 20-to-30-somethings that have disposable income that are willing to part with $50 for a make-your-own kit which turns out to be over priced for what you actually get.
It is my opinion that their business will not be sustainable at the scale they are currently at, over the long haul, because anyone with half a brain will see how simple it is to replicate the same result for a fraction of the cost after using one of their packaged kits just one time. They will have the bottles already, the directions on how to do it, most kitchens have a spice rack full of spices, ....just add vodka or the grain spirits of their choice, and voila, same thing for way less cost. Juniper berries might be the most difficult thing to find for some, but they are readily available on-line. In fact, if you want to use fresh juniper berries as opposed to dried ones, they grow all over Europe and North America. Chances are, if you don't have one growing in your own yard, that you know someone that does.
I suppose they will have some repeat customers just buying the spice refill package, but even then, with a little close observation, one could figure out what is in it, and duplicate it for a lot less than the $10(plus shipping) that they want for theirs.
Again, it was not my intention to insult you, ...sorry.

Sorry for my reaction, as well. It was a bad day and I over reacted. Sis had just been placed in the hospital.
Anyhow, you are right it is over priced for what you get. Two bottles, one is 500 ml and the other is 250 ml, not sure why they would two (instead of just one 750 ml bottle) other that to make it look like you are getting more. Then you get the plastic funnel and a pos strainer. I think you estimate of $15 cost is probably high based on having seen it. I am guessing more like $10. Heck of a net profit.
