Liebig Stands

Post by Zeig »

A few may have seen me mention im making a new liebig this week but this requires one more thing on my part. my 5 gal pot still can't support a 3-4' condenser. For anyone who has had this issue, what did you support it with? I plan to just connect the still and liebig with copper tubing. i was thinking of using an old tripod attached to the center of the liebig. This way i can control its height and angle. Either way i'm curious what other options have been used.
You can't think of the impossible, because it's impossible. Ergo if you can think it, its possible.

The tripod is a good solution - lets you do fine adjustments for changing the angle. I think I recall seeing at least one other person using a tripod. I really can't think of a better solution.

Try an "HD Google Search" with the search term "tripod". It might turn up something.

I used the lower half of an adjustable tripod roller stand from my wood shop . Used a longer section of pipe for height adjustment . Been working great for almost a year .

Here's what I initially did to support my liebig:

I found these parts at the local hardware store. I don't recall what they're called. They are copper plated:

I drilled a hole in the top rim of my keg to accept an eyelet. I used nuts to secure it to the keg.
I happened to have this aluminum tube which was flattened & forked on both ends. I widened the forks so they fit over a bolt. I used it as the support arm. It came from an old tonneau cover for a pickup bed.
I used a bolt, 2 flat washers and a wing nut like shown below to lock the support arm in place. Easy to loosen, adjust and tighten.

Now a days I just have a small chain hanging from the ceiling and I attach it to the liebig to support it. Just cheapo tiny chain you hang plants with. It's really easy that way and it definitely supports & relieves any stress from all fittings/joints. I don't even use the support rod method anymore.

Some people require a free-standing method so the previous method would work.

I've also seen folks design their pot still riser in such a way as to move the center of gravity over the still boiler - a kind of goose neck looking arrangement. There are probably a few examples of the design here on the forum, but I don't have a clue as to how to search for it.

my dual 2 footer is virtually vertical, and sits in between some 2x4s ... this also allows me to mount the parrot underneath

It is easy enough to build - if you set up on level ground, then I just positioned the vertical liebig higher or lower on the stand.

It works really well since all the weight is balanced and straight down! Though this pic doesn't show it I soldered a tab to the top of the 1.5" center piece. Wait...

there you go that one does. And burned the hell out of my fingers doing it.
It's now on a 7.5 gal keg that I can run full tilt and a trickle of flow through it is plenty to condense everything.
