New hand made 100% copper thumper

Post by MoonWhisky »

Hello everyone! My first post let me explain a little. I started out not having a clue about a year ago by using the basic 3 gallon SS pot with 3/8 10ft copper coil...
Now I have a 7.5 gallon SS pot with a copper 5" funnel (soldered to the lid) leading into 1" copper pipe going into a 100% 2.2 gallon copper thumper that I hand made. (I was using the 1/2 gallon mason jar before  ) leading into a 1/2" 26" long copper water jacket. I haven't ran the still with the thumper yet, I'm wait for my mash to finish (15lbs white sugar 1lbs brown sugar 64oz of corn syrup 2 B vitamins & a splash of lemon juice in 6 gallons). My question is now that I have a larger thumper will I have tothe run the broiler pot hotter to keep the thumper to temp? I normally run the still till both temps in the broiler and thumper synced out at 200 degrees (using the 1/2 mason jar). Should I keep the same logic or go with different approach. I'm guessing the proof will tell me everything but that's why I'm hear.. You guys know what's going on and I'm hear to learn. Thanks for ur time! From Illinois

you really can disregard the temps all together. Even with the thumper. heat that baby up until you get product flowing and then adjust the heat down until you get your desired takeoff rate. Try one run without the thermometers and come back and tell me I'm wrong.
would also love to see pics of your thumper set up.

Hey, MoonWhiskey!

As bearriver said, your wash will be ok but depending on what you want to make there are great proven recipes in the Tried and True forum. Take a look and see what sounds good to you.

While you're at it, do a good read on the Forum Trilogy links in my signature. A huge wealth of learning right there.

Be safe and enjoy the journey!

I like the way you have the thumper resting on the lid itself. Pretty cool idea and a space-saver to boot.

Yes I'd figured with 1 gallon of wash in the thumper and 5 in the broiler it should work out plus keep the heat more in a controlled area.

What's that third "nipple" for?

The thumper is sealed up due to I didn't want a lid or leaks, so that is my fill and drain hole that gets corked up during the run

Pretty neat. I like it. Is that a funnel upside down on the top? I assume that you soldered it right? If you have any brass in the mix be sure to pickle it.

Thats what I thought. I see what looks like bolts and thought maybe it was not a funnel and maybe it was bolted.

They are rubber then? Get rid of them and replace with cork or wood.Rubber or plastic is not good they will break down and leach bad shite into your product! Read the rules we live by again hate to see you put that much work into her and then produce a something that will slowly poison ya.Great looking rig other than that friend.

Will do! I'm guessing the ethanol is what breaks them done because there out of a pressure cooker. Luckily I have access to many sizes and types of corks at my local hardware center

Yep ethanol will eat them up and the really bad part is you will not even know on your thumper. It will erode from the underside and wont show any sign on top.Just make sure the cork is nat solid and not glued particle.I would wrap them with ptfe tape anyhow.
