Distiled IPA beer
Well a 5 gallon batch of IPA beer didn't turn out to well on its own, and a run through the still changed it a full 270 degrees. It was a bit minty to try to describe it best. Well I added medium toast an a few alligator char pieces. It is quite an interesting spirit, and I am trying to classify it for a name.... its not a whiskey or bourbon, or rum or brandy, so what would you classify it as?
Re: Distiled IPA beer
I would classify it as a major cleaning process to get all the hop oils out of your still! =)
In all seriousness though, hops is no good for your still, glad however you got a drinkable product out of something that didn't work out!
Depending on your style still it would probably be classified as a flavored neutral

Well, between Scotch and nothin', I suppose I'd take Scotch. It's the nearest thing to good moonshine I can find.

Well, it's barley malt right? So technically it's scotch... with hops. Call it hopscotch
Easiest way to avoid being on a TTB list is to not purchase a boiler, full column, or condensor from a retailer. Build your own.

Hopscotch, I like that. I think it shall be labeled as such. And for cleaning the still, I really didn't think of that, but I guess I should get on it as I'm running the rest of my sugar wash today and then my trial of hook rum. I guess I better get it going on some vinegar......
Re: Distiled IPA beer
This thread brings up another question....
Since I live in the PNW, there is beer everywhere. Hoppy delicious beer and I have access to a lot of it. What if a person were to build a separate column and condenser just for beer runs? I would imagine the hop oils would be hard on your column and condenser but your boiler (keg) would be much easier to clean if even necessary. Just a thought. Any opinion? I know you guys have opinions!

There is no such thing as a stupid question....... Unless you didn't research it first.

If I had it I would run it, then clean with a fores n heads run. I think every one has a surplus of those to run should clean up just fine. My .02$

Re: Distiled IPA beer
Charbay R5 is a whiskey distilled from Racer 5 IPA, so it sounds like you got something similar.
