Another Canuck looking to learn

Hi all,

I'm very new to all of this...still researching what still to make (I have a good set of plans for one now), how to make grain mashes, sugar mashes and proper terminology.

I have happened to stumble across this site a number of times so I thought I should join to continue to learn from the experiences of others.

Hopefully I can start to share my distilling journey soon...

Thanks! I was looking at a Valved Reflux Still Head, found a free PDF that shows how to build it and some other good tips. From what I have read it's a good upgrade from a pot still but still offers a run that doesn't strip all the flavour. I plan on trying a wheat Vodka and wheat Whiskey with a charred oak soak. I know, grand visions at least my wife should enjoy this new obsession...if what I make is any good.

The past hour or so on here has provided WAY more information than I could find using "Google".

I am assuming that you are talking about all copper? I think I know which one you are talking about. I am a wheat fan also. Start with DWWG in tried and true. So if you are after a vodka and a whiskey maybe a keg might be better so you can reflux for vodka. Do you understand about reflux?

Owning a valves reflux myself I would urge you to research other reflux designs. The valves job by works great but really is a one trick pony and painfully sloooooooooooow. However, they look cool

Yes it's copper, a nixon-stone offset style. I have yet to purchase any material for it, still wrapping my head around the whole process. This site has so much info to go through and understand.

I was looking at SS beer pots 10/15gal (40-60L) and lock it down with 4-6 hasps (gasket for vapour control), that way I can get multiple uses out of it.

As for reflux…I have a basic idea but until I put fire to the boiler it's all just theory to me
