Hillbilly Flute
How does the plumbing work on the Hillbilly flute work Understand it is a shotgun Dephlagmator and a Graham condenser -Water goes in the Back of the Dephlagmator and then is a adjusted with a Ball Valve then there is a bypass valve for the condenser adjusted by a ball valve - I like the system but cannot figure how the water flow works. A drawing would be helpful as I'm going to attempt to make one.

I watched this video and I thought that the water always ran counter flow (opposite way of vapor). On his shotgun he is running counterflow but on his deflag he is not. I have never ran a deflag so I might be missing something. There are better reflux people to get answers from but thats what i think.

I run mine the same way mainly because my 2 lines come in from the top so I run my water in line to the bottom of the dephlagmater and my exit is at the top.halfbaked wrote:I watched this video and I thought that the water always ran counter flow (opposite way of vapor). Re: Hillbilly Flute
He said the top outlet is the drain in the deflag. Looks like he's running it into the base of the PC, out the top into the manifold, the valve closest to the PC will direct coolent to the deflag, the other is the out put. I've never liked valves and crap hanging off the still, more weight and more Cost, ect. I do a.wall mount valve now, so easy!.

If you want to know the real directions to make a hobby scaled flute, they were invented HERE. Look up OLD DOGS FLUTE BUILD in the search engine and you will see where the design was stolen from.
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

Re: Hillbilly Flute
I've been wrong before so here are my thoughts.
With a dephlag, I prefer the more elegant term rainmaker, you are trying to push the product back down against the heat so you want to hit it hard with the cold right off. Cold cocked as it were.
With a product condenser you are pulling it through the condenser. Not trying to knock the legs out from under it.
I own a 4 plate HB with a lot of runs through her. Like any fine woman, very consistent once you learn her rhythms and sweet spots.

Re: Hillbilly Flute
Have spent all day pouring through the Forums and found Old Dogs Picture of the original flute. I would think this is the best way to go - I do like the 2 valve system as well
So the only drain is from the Defrag that is valved and the only water input is the Left ball valve?
He wrote this - (Hope it is OK to post his words and pics)
The Flutes cooling system consists of two condensers, a Graham condenser, and the dephlagmater. Both condensers are controlled with independent ball valves, the water feed input is through the Graham condenser and each condenser has its own independent water return.
The Flute can be run in potstill mode by simply turning off the water supply to the dephlagmater, and just using the Graham condenser to condense the vapor.
When using the Flute in reflux mode I can turn off the return from the Graham condenser, diverting it's output to the dephlagmater, the output flow from the dephlagmater it controlled by the third valve on its output line, by using all three valves it is possible to adjust the temperature of the column for the desired output.
It would be possible to run with just the two manifold valves, but with the valve on the dephlagmater output, it means that I can supply the water at full pressure keeping the dephlagmater topped up at all times.
The whole cooling assembly can be removed with the compression fittings, one at the top of the Graham condenser which is the vapor input, and one in the water feed line to the dephlagmater.
