I'm in the same boat and I understand where you are coming from . My wife and I had to put down a cat ( ) she had had for 18 years . I said no more cats . Friday a rescue group is bringing a 13 week old Aus blue heeler/Border Collie cross to our farm to see if she 'fits' . What won't fit ? SOH's biggest concern is that she wants another pet that bonds with her like the cat did . Afraid that the pup will bond with me like the Aus shepherd that we now have who worships the ground I walk on and goes wherever I go .
> What can I tell her ? I'll cage that puppy all day so she can be the only care giver when she gets home from work from 5:30AM to 3:30 pm . I don't think so ........ This little gal is going to spend her days with 'Daddy' and her big sister Maggie .'Mommy' is going to have to work her magic to bond with this pup . Stock dog bred is stock dog if left to choice . i figure I'm gonna have two dogs in my pickup after Friday :D

If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .

Similar with me. Wife wanted a dog, I said no. She promised she would take care and raise it. Same promise kids make. 12 years it's been now and the little dalmatian/black lab cross she wanted has been mine from the beginning. Older than my children and just like one of them. When I speak of my girls, she's one of em too.

Say Butch,
That blend is a darn good one. Mine was the smartest I had ever seen. Super quick on learning and extremely intuitive reader of body language.
Heeler side only truely respects one master I'd say however, but was a real sweat dog in general.
I miss mine and broke my heart to put her down.

My still hand is an aus shepherd blue merle. He's a smart one too. He watches everything I do as if taking note for when he takes over. He can open every door in the house with one try if it's not dead bolted. We learned he could do this one day when my wife locked herself out. It was winter and she and the dog were the only ones home. She went out to get the paper in her robe and slippers. As she was fiddling with the door, the way you do when you know you're looked out, the door suddenly opened and there he was.

He's particularly fond of jet skiing and herding goats. Sadly, I did not get him in this photo, be he is the reason the goat is on the picnic table.
