Hello from NZ

Post by stenknz »

Hi everyone.

Quite interested in making my own spirits. Quite new to this. SO I am glad to have found this forum.
I am planning to buy a small 8L Pot Still, quite cheap but should do the trick. Would love to make my own Rum or Whiskey.

Plan just to read up at this stage and over the next month or so start my first batch.

Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do some reading before you spend money on that still. It would be good for making gins and doing experimental runs, but for whiskey & rum, the meager output is likely to make hard work of making enough to age.

Yea. Bigger pot is good. Check scrap yards around you. Could be a lot cheaper then buying new.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
I'm a JAFFA thats what the rest of New Zealand calls Aucklanders LOL.

Don't have too much room and thought an 8L Pot Still would be good enough to start. Was also looking into an Air Still and from what I have read they seem to do the job quite well. Lots to learn so haven't yet made up my mind yet and do appreciate the comments.

I know some people like air stills, I know everyone I have encountered with a real still does not like air stills. The only people that like air stills are people who have only had an air still and have never tasted a drop from a real still :)

Hello fellow Kiwis. Just wondering, have any of you guys found a cheap source of 2" copper pipe in NZ? Other countries seem to have an abundance of it quite cheap, but when I tried to find it from scrap yards, plumbers, air con dudes etc I could only find it new from plumbing suppliers for about $600 a length new! I have decided to go stainless anyhow, just curious.

I've had good luck at scrap yards. I got a keg and 1.5m of 2in copper pipe for $80. In Hamilton. Guy had a lot more too.
