I ordered one of these universal screw-in-element adapters tonight but I'm trying to decide what I should replace the natural rubber washers/gaskets with.
I'd read in The Compleat Distiller that RTV silicone was safe, but after checking the forums I'm doubtful. I considered musical cork, but it's expensive here and I saw someone say it leaked. I guess that leaves me with not many options, seems PTFE is a 'maybe' at best when it comes to safe materials?
Any advice would be more than welcome.
Thanks.

I used musical grade cork for the seals on the sight glasses on my new still. They are not leaking at all.

Once you cut out your shape, you can double or triple the material to get a very good seal if needed to get the seal to conform a bit better to your boiler.

Solder the bolts in so the dont leak. Yes solder. Next get some decently thick natural cork and make your seal. You do not need music grade. It'll work.

Are there any issues with the material of the flange? Just bought one and I think it's zinc. Thanks.

Just looking for a clear answer. I thought safety was encouraged. Unless you have something helpful to offer...

Safety is encouraged. So is reading and research. Spoon feeding, however, is not. You've been told where to find the info.
