After 5 hours it smells like eggs. Did I do something wrong? Help please!!

Too much sugar, no nutrients, throw that mess out & pick something from the tried & true.
Moonshine.... American as apple pie & it's part of our heritage, history & culture.

+1 on what firewater said. Slow down, research some more and try again. Tell us about your still. How's it built? What materials? How is it heated?
No, officer, I wasn't distilling alcohol! It was probably that guy!

How much sugar should I use in a 4gallon wash? I have a Mile hi Still. I used red star yeast in a bs playing around type experiment, no sulfur smell. Fleishmans...no more!!!

Look at Uncle Jesse's Simple Sour Mash in tried n true. After you spend some time in the new distillers lounge.

Wrong question. Read firewater's response again then go pick a recipe from T&T.Ray wrote:How much sugar should I use in a 4gallon wash?

The smell of yeast shitting in your drink. No nutrients, way to high starting SG. Yeast is a living organism and needs to be happy in its enviroment. Read up on some of the Tried and True Sugar washes, Like Wineos or Birdwatchers and you will start to get an idea.
A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

If it was easy everyone would be doing it (besides the idiots on "Moonshiners).

I realize this more and more everyday....some of the folks here are just on a totally different level. I know enough to get by and make decent whisky, but some of the stuff here is very "in-depth".StillLearning1 wrote: you realize ya still don't know squat!

I agree. That's why we all point to tried and true for people like me and OP that are new. UJSSM is not hard at all, it let's you learn the basics, and where you can take it from there is almost endless!!!
But what the heck do I know.....I am still learning.
Re: First Run....Stinks!! Help please!!
Hey this may be a dumb question, I can get all the nutrients that are needed. Pretty much...it seems like the yeast needs a multivitamin in the wash. What do you think?

Re: First Run....Stinks!! Help please!!
LOL!!! Thats okay...only way to learn is to ask questions or to fail. I have read. And basically...the same nutrients the yeast needs seems the same thing well all need. And most of the ingredients are in multivitamins. Just thinking....has anyone tried using a multivitamin in their wash?

Ray, I gave you the link to tried and true. There are recipes there that explain all of what is needed.Ray wrote:Hey this may be a dumb question, I can get all the nutrients that are needed. Pretty much...it seems like the yeast needs a multivitamin in the wash. What do you think?
If you are talking "multivitamin" like one would take every morning, I'm going to throw a can of tomato paste at you. Now go and read. Thanks.

NO. The way to learn here is to READ and lots of it. To learn in this hobby by failing gets you or someone you care about hurt or dead. Got it now?Ray wrote:LOL!!! You think so? Ask a couple more noob questions without doing the research that we require and see if Rad doesn't show up to take you off at the knees.Ray wrote:Man!!! You guys are rough!! Re: First Run....Stinks!! Help please!!
Hey...about an hour ago, just for shits and giggles...I threw a womens one a day and a mens centrum along with 2 mag-oxide tabs, along with 2 tablespoons of OJ, just to see what would happen. The sulfur smell is gradually disappearing and it is smelling more like ethanol. Not saying it is working, but since I am going to throw the wash away, I can use it as an experiment.

What purpose does the OJ serve?

Probably citric acid to lower ph? Just throwing it out there...T-Pee wrote:What purpose does the OJ serve?

Re: First Run....Stinks!! Help please!!
Exactly!! I may have gotten wrong info, but what I read said yeast like the environment at a ph of 4 to 5. Since sugar is neutral and so is water. I figured a little OJ would change the acidity to a lower PH.ShineRunnah wrote:Probably citric acid to lower ph? Just throwing it out there...T-Pee wrote:What purpose does the OJ serve?
