Mop wringers for grains

Post by Brutal »

Which exact mop wringer did you buy and what you you like about it or wish was better?

I need one asap. I just squeezed 50 pounds of grain and I don't even think i could punch the clown right now.

Bought one of theses from lowes.
Not real impressed with it, but it works a hell of a lot better than hand squeezing.

I bought the same one ShadyLane has, not really happy with it, but it does beat a hand job !! I wish I had one of those old fashioned ones made from metal, this plastic one has a lot of spring in it, and you can't really bear down on it like I want to. Better than nothing, I guess.

I have the same one as well. Just don't fill it with too much grain and it works well. Squeeze a little out at a time.

Mine is very similar to that one, I got it at Lowe's. It has the metal handle and the pivot assembly is all metal. I use the 5 gallon paint strainer bags and fill it about 1/2 full, it will take my grains to almost dry. I typically lose about 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon from a 10 gallon mash. I don't squeeze the last bit of the grain bed where all the yeast and barm is laying.

Has anyone tried just getting the replacement squeezer and hanging it on a bucket?

Tried a mop wringer.Use an apple press now. Way better. Costs more, but it works a lot better.

With the narrow bottom of the bucket it is a little tippy.

AH HA ! Lightbulb just went on  I got all the parts to make a press : 20 ton long stroke hydraulic cylinder , wood , metal , and tools to build the press I have been putting off because the apple crop has been failing every year here . Bet that will knock the socks off a mop bucket .............

I've got a apple press and the mop wringer is easier to use for squeezing mash.

Ohhhhh, TB just made my light bulb go on. Got a MIG welder for Christmas and on top of a few things I need to fix, I have been thinking of other projects. Apple press!

I feel your pain Brutal. I've sworn off fermenting on-grain entirely after a season of ripped cloths, sloppy funnels, messy floors, and sore, pruny hands. False bottom...here we come.

Almost forgot to come back and update this. I did order a mop bucket and I didn't get the same rubbermaid as everyone else. Call me devil's advocate :moresarcasm: So I got the "Genuine Joe" splash guard from Amazon. I think I works really good. Hell of a lot better than these old mitts do. It is of course plastic but bending was minimal in my one-time-so-far experience. I elected to leave the wheels off of it. I just set it on the floor. It's not like I'm going to be doing different ferments in different rooms. This kept it from rolling while I was pushing on it. The side of the bucket did bend when I put a lot of pressure on it, but it wasn't any big deal. It's a strong design bucket and it has rough graduated marks in it so you can tell when you can't pick it up anymore. The handle is great, and there is a handle spot under the back that makes it good for pouring. Another striking thing about it was that it's so clean when you get it. I didn't want to use a brush on it but I just rinsed it out with a dish rag and hot water. I could not detect any smell from the plastic at all. It's make of #5 Polypropylene. I paid less the the rubbermaid too. If you need a mop bucket check this out.

Sorry for the months late response bubba.

We moved to the country close to two years ago. It was rough move, and I thought I would have MORE free time here. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOOOO. I haven't made anything since then. I actually made a 20 gallon ujssm starter mash but it is still sitting in the fermenters to this day. And I think it turned.. That wringer was good. I'm not saying someone couldn't build a better one, but its not a bad investment at all. Brutal says go for it!

I've used the F^CK out of my Genuine Joe GJO02347 wringer for both distilling and beer brewing grains.
Wouldn't trade it.
It drains a grain bed, leaving the grain damp only. I sparge and wring beer grain with same effective results.
I don't remember who tipped me off on using one of these, but I remember he said it was a life changer.
It is.

+1. just don't get greedy and try to wring too much at once. slow and easy wins the race. I can wring 30 gallons of mash in about 20 minutes
