Newbie

Post by wingingit »

Hi all, wish I would have found this site a few weeks ago. I have an alembic pot that my wife purchased for me for xmas. Ive done a brandy that my uncle taught me how to do for a few years, just found it interesting to do. Ive never distilled before, so this is a new experience. Ive bought some books and did some reading. So I started two mashes a week ago a sweetfeed and a flaked maize. I found this site the day I put them up. Realize I could have done some things different but I did take hydrometer readings to start and im keeping my temp constant. Ill be curious to see where im at this weekend they are both still bubbling away. Thanks for welcoming me and looking forward to all the information that is laid out here. Thanks again.

Good luck, Winginit. It can be hard to sort the good info from the crap on the internet, but you can rest assured you have found the right resource here. Limitless amounts of info, and it is the good stuff, you can trust these guys.

In case you don't catch it in any links, make sure to do your cleaning runs. One of which is a "sacrificial alcohol run". It's sacrificial because you can't drink it. You'll need to do these to get all the flux and crud out associated with the manufacturing. If you don't want to waste one of your ferments you have on the go, no worries. I have left ferments for weeks after done, and as long as they are air locked and you don't peak, they'll be fine. This'll give you time to do your cleaning runs and either run some cheap boxed wine or a sugar wash (birdwatchers in tried and true is simple and cheap).

Best of luck.
