New Hobby, First Post, so I'll make the most of it!

Post by SilentShine »

SilentShine here. Hi folks. I figure I'll make the most of my first post, and make it a brief of my initial exploits, and what got me interested. Since you guys appreciate a bit of detail, and I don't talk to anyone about my hobby, this is a good release for me.

So, a few years ago I started watching, what came to be, one of my favorite TV shows. I'm a pretty logical guy so fact from fiction is pretty easy to determine. But the basis of the show, and the lore surrounding it, is great! A true inspiration really, to what can possibly be accomplished with some basic backwoods science.

After 3 years of watching I decided it was time. I needed a still. I knew the design I wanted. Full Copper pot with a doubler and a worm. I searched and searched, and although I could build one with less copper, I had no intention of anything else, and I was too uncomfortable sourcing copper sheeting then possibly goofing up. As with a lot of you, I decided to turn to Ebay. . . and I started sifting through the garbage. I knew what I wanted, but this was still a month long process of comparing my 3 favorites and stalking the seller a bit!

Finally I made my purchase, which had shipping, and an additional charge for customs clearance because I'm far in Eastern Canada... on an island... This was within my first still budget. I received it 8 months ago, and waited. . . . A month ago, I decided to craft a worm box out of a 6 or 8 qt stainless pot with stainless strainer. I reversed the 2 units so that the pot sat in the strainer, because I wanted the height for my worm spout to clear the top of a 500ml Mason Jar and I needed more height for my worm to come off the doubler... I then added my hookups for water. I'm adding a picture so you can see my personal hobbyist setup.

If anyone seems interested in my first 4 runs, or info on the O.C.B slash UJSSM I've experimented with I'll post the details.

For all you experienced guys, yes I have read the all the newbie info, and what not to do. I've read hundreds of posts over the last 6 months... It is a continual learning process, and I'm with ya! :) You guys were a great help believe me!!

Quick FYI, I do not do ph testing, or any initial mash testing. I do not use carbon. I like to use my senses. It's only natural, so please don't hold it against me. Honestly, If you stick to Tried and True Recipes with minor modifications, and you know your equipment, and you work clean, you have the possibility of few errors. My first 2 mashes, and 3 out of 4 runs were successful, the fourth got me mostly tails... but it was my own fault adding way too much back-set.
My equipment consists of a 20Gal loose top fermenter, and two 5Gal with mason jar vapor locks. My still, Proof and trails hydrometer, long stem thermometer

Here's a kicker for ya.. I don't even drink. I won't confirm I do now... but I'm like a proud father!

Welcome SilentShine, looks like you've done your reserch! Can't even tell you to do the required reading! Welcome

PS I don't do PH testing either! :shh:

Nice introduction, also a nice little rig. Enjoy the journey as I found it is continual and lightbulb moment at least once a week for me.

:esurprised: lol I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't! The last thing I wanted after reading the site and posts was to post and be told to go read up on something before posting!

It really is a journey! I can't tell you how many basics I picked up here before my attempt. I was lucky, this was the first place I started looking for info! Thank you HD!

Nice little rig you got there. I was much the same...searching all around to buy, but ended up building.

I see you have it on an electric stove. Some have ran without problem, but most experience surging due to the cycling of the element. A diffuser plate can help sometimes. Maybe look up surging for a bit of a read. A fix could be a re-wired hotplate to installing an internal water heater with controller. All very simple with detailed threads here.

Welcome from another Canadian.

Since you don't drink, please feel free to put me on your Christmas list. I prefer Oaked...which is the next rabbit hole for you.

Cheers! from Alberta!

Thank you,
True, I tested my stove three times before my initial run. It was odd, but I found at higher temperatures it surges, but If I turn on the stove and slowly turn it up I'm good. Mine seems perfect set at approx 4.2 on the dial during my run. I have been looking for something more efficient at heat dispersal and thought about a diffuser plate. At this point my finances are tight for additions, so I'm trying to make due. In the spring I'm hoping to start building a larger copper still based on the design of the one I posted a pic of. I will definitely need to do something better then an electric stove!

Hilarious! I'll keep you in mind. I have started the occasional lick. Actually I recently took 500ml of 110P and added maraschino cherry's and the syrup (from the dollar store) up to 750 ml. My 110 had a horrid smell to it,(you guys know why! Don't act like you don't know!!:) ) but tasted really nice. Once I added the cherries and syrup I put the lid on the jar and heated it in hot water on the stove to heat the cherries and sort of cook them for 15 minutes in the shine. I shook the shit out of it, aired it, and left it in the freezer for 2 days, aired it and let sit for 4 days. I then opened the jar, attached a coffee filter with multiple pin holes in it and let it strain into a new jar. It could use 1 more straining for perfection, but it tastes amazing. At least 90 - 95% of the smell was absorbed by the cherries, and I still ended up with a full 500 ml, only completely infused with cherry. My version of a Cherry-Bomb. It hits all the right places on the way down. One shot feels the same to me as 2 and a half beer!

There is a fairly recent post I saw, can't remember where, but it's a traditional all copper pot powered by electric. Something that might peak your interest for the future build you speak of. If I can find it, I'll come edit and post link unless somebody else remembers the thread.

Edit: found it...Soft Batch made it

Thank you, that's a pretty informative topic. The pics depicted my only issue..space, I hope to resolve that. The electric option is really easy though!
