13 gallon fermenters

Post by firewater69 »

I bought 2, 13 gallon barrels for 19.00 each. I have been looking for a better deal, but finally bought these. it should make it easier to ferment on the grain vs dealing with 5-6 gallon buckets.

You will like those. Dont worry about an air lock just spin the lid down but not tightened.

Bushman is referencing the type of hdpe and if they are food grade.
Naproxene and mash both help ease pain.

I have 2 of those very same barrels and yes mine are pdfe2 food grade. I took mine and drilled a 7/16 hole in the center and installed the grommet for the bubbler . They work great, I have done at least 20 fermentations in each one and the seal is still in excellent shape. Just clean them well to keep bacteria at bay. look inside at where the handles are and there is an area that can trap old mash use a scrub brush to clean it.

I have six of those babies, I drilled a hole in the lid, inserted a rubber groumet for the bubbler. Then after several runs I figured out where the drain level is and put spigots in the bottoms. Only have to open the spigot and let them drain. By the way I poured water in mine with a five gallon bucket, and they hold 15 gallon, not 13 as advertised. Had mine for about two years, and use them every day.

Anybody have a link to a source? I saw them online at some point in the past, but have since lost the link. Is there a brand name on them that would help us find them?

Nice find firewater, those should do the job quite nicely. Are you using a 15 gal. Boiler? You will have plenty of head space if so. Good job.

I was looking at the exact same deal on ebay just last night. I like them, but the shipping is $20 each. That makes them $40 a piece not sure I want to pay that much when I already have a brute.
But what the heck do I know.....I am still learning.

I bet that smells great. Did you malt the corn? I assume you did, haven''t seen that in a store. I'd like to hear about how that comes out please. Sounds tasty.

It does smell good, & yes i malted the corn. seems easier than cookin unless you have a steam cooker, ( awesome rig btw) im interested in doing a smaller version to fit my pot.

It doesn't have to be smaller. I am going to do a batch in my 15-16 (??) gallon fermenter on steam soon. I am just going to take the head off it and run the pipe straight to the bottom, open. Going to be my s3 all malt. I am going to kill all the bugs that hitchhike on that damn malt dammit. My bugs or no bugs.

It came out good, a little heavy on the rye for me, but I've got it on oak @ 60% & it's very smooth, I may tweak the recipe a bit (time will tell) but overall I think it's a keeper. I just ran the sugarhead from it last night.
