Re: rifles
I haven't bought any guns in many years, the last one I bought was a short barreled 12ga pump shotgun for the wife which I carved roses into the stock for her. I believe in the "point and click" home security system and figure first a pump shotgun makes a very distinct and recognizable noise and second with #2 shot she is unlikely to miss if she ever has to use it. A while back a salesman was trying to sell me a new security system and said "What if somebody breaks into your house?" My response was "Their gonna die." After her recovered a bit from this he said "Well. what if your wife is home alone?" My response once again was "Their gonna die." Haven't herd from any of them since. One of my personal favorites is my savage 222 which was converted from a 22Hornet. Single shot break open so old it has a 2 digit serial # and is the most accurate both long and short distance gun I've ever used. The only problem is the last time I shot it I bought 2 boxes of shells and only got 6 good ones. My guess for this is old ammo since it has become kind of an unusual and under used round they tend to sit on the shelf a long time.
Re: rifles
I think a shotgun should be everyone's first weapon. It can be used for almost anything if you load it right!
I favor military rounds...9mm, .45, .223, .308...just because if anything goes poop, they will probably be the easiest to find.
But I love my .44 mag revolvers.

Re: rifles
I've got a few, but my favorite to shoot is my Winchester 73', made in 1892 in 32-20. The little beauty shoots flat out past 90 yds!! It was pretty much a basket case when I picked it up but with a lot of searching I found some parts and made some others, then I sent it off to Redman's to get it relined. I do my own loading for it and use 4 grains of Unique with a 115 grain rnfp slug.

I like my .40 Stoegar Cougar (a baretta made in Turkey after the plant was relocated. I enjoy my sks and my 22 magnum is all around versatile and both used to be cheap to shoot. Like my Belgium 12 A5 and my favorite big game is Winchester 308-the original sniper rifle from the Nam.

Couple sporterized Mauser's both 8 x57 one turk one German
Rem model 788 7mm-08 carbine
H&R 223 single shot
Old savage 22
Mossberg 835 12g turkey gun
Super Redhawk 44 mag
I buy a gun I get reloading dies for it. If I had to grab one and disappear to the wilds it would be the Ankara turk or the 788.

Re: rifles
i'm looking for a bit of advise, and you guys (obviously) know which end of the gun to hold. i got my standard .22 ruger rodent rifle and a 12 ga single for ducks an such and granpappy's 16ga i like for upland game. (damn, that 16 is tough ammo to find these days)
i'm thinking i want a fun target gun and been going to the range lately for fun. I tried a rifle that has a recoiless semi-automatic mechanism with a .45 round (same like handgun 45) and it was smooth and fast and deadly accurate. but it's crazy money like 2500 bucks. i'd like to find something with a reasonably priced ammo thats smooth and accurate. not really into big, as i'm not likely going after elephants or such.
given that, does anyone have an opinion on what would be a fun, easy to run weapon? (that won't break the bank?)

Re: rifles
HDNB, I properly shoot 90% of the time with22LR. It's what I recommend for a 'fun' gun. The Ruger 10/22 is a great rilfe that has accessories up the ying-yang. You can make it into whatever you want.

Re: rifles
It sounds as though you are wanting a semi automatic rifle for target practice. The 10/22 Ruger is great, but finding .22 lr rounds for it can be problematic. There are lots of AR 15's out there and can be had new for as little as $600. I would look for one chambered to shoot the 5.56 nato round, It will shoot the Remington .223 round also. Both are easily obtainable and the recoil is not severe. If I was looking for a bolt action target rifle for plinking The .22/250 is an excellent choice. Very accurate with minimal recoil. It all depends on what you want to do.
Re: rifles
7mm Mag BSA box clip bolt action for moose/bear/deer. Like the box clip because it's flush and doesn't get caught if I have to run through brush. Good for long shots (up to 600 yards, no BS) and a fairly flat trajectory. If I'm pushing and doing a lot of bushwhacking, nothing beats my 30 30 marlin lever. Good up to 100 yards, short and compact for walking through bush, and tubular magazine means no worrying about dropping a clip.
Re: rifles
Forgot to mention my lever action, 444 marlin, great for the brush.

My brother has one of those, bought it when they were first introduced. I always wanted one but then again I've always wanted a 600 Nitro express and a lever action 10ga too. Re: rifles
Love me some fireamrs, just cant afford to buy them right now ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif)
What Ive acquired so far for rilfles is a Mosin Nagant 91/30, I like it. Really reliable and accurate and packs quite a punch. Plus they're cheap and so is the ammo. They make great range guns, ive used mine for boar hunting too. Then I have a Remington 7mm Bolt action, again cant go wrong with it.
Shotguns I have a Mossberg 20 gauge I got when I was about 16 for my first deer hunting, comes with both barrels (slug and bird shot).
For pistols I have a Taurus 1911 45 ACP. And a Colt Junior .25. Absolutely love shooting the 1911. The system works perfectly. The Colt Junior is pretty fun to shoot too, but the ammo is real expensive.
My Dad goes to alot of gun raffles and usually gets real lucky at them. Over the past 5 years hes probably accumulated over 10 different firearms, most are rifles. He has a Benelli or 3, Remingtons... etc...The most recent one he won a Revolver and an AR15.
One cool thing he has is a Winchester lever action, forgot the model and caliber, but its really neat and really old. It has knoches marked in the stock along with spent ammo from when it was being used on a regular basis.
I want to get a 9mm and a lever action rifle eventually and a pump shotgun, but that will be a ways away.
