What size pipe/how much?

Post by fullmetal7777 »

Been looking around for a while and cant find an exact answer. Ill be building a boka reflux, using 2" copper pipe. Wanting to do a double wound coil as well. What size should my copper piping be, and about how much should i get? i figure a 12'' head would be a good size, so the coil should be around 10'' long? Thanks

...cant find an exact answer.
Sounds like you'd benefit from reading everything in the New Distiller Reading Lounge a few more times...all of this info is very readily available in the post with content copied from the wiki about building a bok -

A 6"(150mm) condenser in a 2"(50mm)column is strong enough to condense all of the water vapor put off at full boil of plain water from 2400 watts of heat, which requires more condensing power than ethanol at regular distilling temperatures. For most applications, a 6" (150mm) condenser is ample: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=16225

When calculating the length of tubing needed to create a concentric dual-coil condenser for a standard 2" (50mm) column, you should plan on about 8-12 (200-300mm) inches of 1/4" (6.4mm) copper tubing for every linear inch of dual-coil condenser desired, but varies based on the space between the each turn of the coil.
An exact answer, right there in the lounge :) This forum is an incredible resource, use it!

Every post in the reading lounge is a goldmine - that's why they're there! You should read all of 'em, even if you don't think it's relevant to what you want to do - there's just too much good info there.

Ok so... Is this 1/4 inch od? Soft or hard? I called a plumbing place and he asked a lot of questions I didn't know the answer to lol

You could save yourself the stress, heartache of kinked copper, madness of doing it over, reading 20 threads on how to finish the end off, save yet another trip to the hardware store for more copper, struggle trying to get the damn salt out of the second try, and just make one of these http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 87&t=43955 in like 15 minutes with some 3/8 stainless steel gas line. Lowes has it around here along with all the plumbing supply houses.

Or if you'd rather go with copper,

http://www.amazon.com/Watts-Copper-Tubi ... B001AH787K" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I got two, 10' to practice with and 10' for the coil. Getting extra to practice with was a good idea. It was tough, but I was able to make a double helix with a 1/2'' cold finger in a few hours. I'll never have to make another coil, there's a little more copper in the vapor path, and it's pretty nice to look at, too :)

Stainless would be just as good, though, if you have enough copper already - and much, much easier to put together.

edit: ...but, I just started reading this thread - http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =1&t=53217

Apparently it's *not* a good thing to have copper in the descending path. Copper catalyzes high proof alcohol at high temperatures into ethyl carbamate, something you do not want to be drinking. Looks like I might be making a SS bok head and condenser soon...more research is needed.
