Hello from San Diego

Post by mrmorden »

Hi everyone,

I have been at it for two years and I attached a picture of my current setup. It is a four gallon still with a worm that uses ice to cool.

It took many very tries until I produced something drinkable, but it is a rewarding hobby!

My current favorite recipe for a four gallon wash is:
10.5 pounds corn meal
2.5 pounds of malted rye
4 pounds of unrefined sugar
distill twice
age in a charred 2.5 gallon oak barrel
drink!

Any comments on my setup are welcome.

Welcome mrmorden, another Californian here. Take time to read crankys post in novice distillers called "a little spoon feeding for new distillers". This will help answer questions you don't even know you have! Enjoy the forums!

I used malted rye to convert the starches to sugar and for the rye flavor. The sugar is to increase the alcohol content since my pot is not big enough for any more grain.

A little curios as to why no one chimed in about the ice coolant. Maybe nobody caught it.
As they've have said over and over, do the reading. It will help. A lot.

I do recommend going with a bigger set-up. I'm almost finished building mine. I started with a 20 qt pot. When I moved I just threw the whole shebang away. And have been working on my keg. Just waiting on my controller then have to build a parrot. I do really enjoy this hobby. Have fun and safe stillin

The larger still is 10 gallons and I hope to have it up and running soon. It should be big enough for me. This is the still that the burglars wanted to steal.
