Heating my converted keg

Post by Jaxom »

I've been giving thought to how I would like to heat my converted keg/boiler. Given all the pro's and con's of propane vs electric, I belive I'd rather go with electric. I've just spent some time looking for heating element simlar to those shown on the website in the stainless steel drum still.

I like the idea that both loops are 110 volt, and can be used on standard house hold current. I did do a google search for heating elements, but most required 240volt or better.

I also like the idea of using two loops rather then one large one. Seems some how more economical that way. Get it up to boil, then cut back to one element and keep the boil going.

So, what would you all recommend? What wattages are recomended. Keg is 15.5 gallons, and I plan on running 13.5 or so gallons of wash at a time. And where can I order these from? In the US, even better in the midwest?

Or, if it's easier, I heard someone mention building a hearter box out of an electric hot water heater element. A schematic and a few pictures of this being done would be handy, if this is recomended.
