Glass aging DUMPSTER DIVING

Post by Jo Diesel »

Was at the recycling center and scored 3 1 gal pickle and sourkrout jars. I thought these were perfect. Then I mixed some together and figured I wanted to do my aging in smaller batches so I was thinking 2 qt jars.
Happened to go into my cellar and we have 8 2 qt mason jars. WHERE DID THESE COME FROM. Then I remembered that is what our local Honey comes in.
Looking for more next time I am at recycling center.

WHAT DO YOU AGE IN AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM.

Those are always good but wine bottles are really good to so the cork can let it breathe

Yes, flatwoods. Rather than cap them with the hard cap they come with, I use a cork which allows for pressure changes and a bit of breathing, right?

I think now we have 35 one gallon wide mouth glass jars - always looking for more

Heavy on the oak and I think we get 10 years in 8 months or less

TP I cant really say they would breath all that much. Will hold up longer than the new metal ones I suspect. If you noticed in the thread I copied, there is another from about that same time when several members had terrible result with some of those particular bottles. Cant really see how "shine" :ewink: can build pressure in a bottle unless exposed to heat and expansion. Best I reacll they are structural flaws that yielded the same types of failures around the handle. Carlos Rossi bottles.
While on the subject, I am leary of recycle bottles, especially if cleaned out. When I collected for wine making in that manner, if the bottle didnt have some wine left in it, or liquor of some sort, I would be hesitant to collect it. Who knows? I could have been used in meth manufacturing or something that would cause you to go wango tango! I do not intent to reuse any glass from poisen, acid, or antifreeze, or anything else unknown for that matter even if it is glass.

I am getting a little tired of eating gallons of Mount Olive pickles myself, but I do have a number of nice jars to show for it. Just a couple more pickles now (yum?) and I will have a new jar....

I don't use those. I have apple juice jugs which seem to me more accepted around these parts.

Found 7 vintage one gallon jugs, from online classified for free. The old style with the small opening that's perfect for the air locks. Also have a few 2.78L apple juice jugs from the store. I like these for holding my spirits. Best jug is a free one! Just need to find some cork for them all...

I have 2 of the 1 gal glass jugs and will use them for extended ageing but the wide mouth jars are so much easier to pack with toasted and charred oak fingers.
After blending some into the 1 gal containers and not getting the results I wanted, I will be aging in the 2qt jars and blending in small quantities first so I don't ruin a large batch.

I use regular ol' 1/2 gallon mason jars and quart jars. I also use 1 gallon glass cider jugs that were gifts from family. works out pretty good for small batch stuff. I also have about 10 gallons in a once used bourbon barrel that I picked up a year or so ago. This has been sitting for almost a year so far. I got smaller batches that have been sitting for 5+ years. Glass works pretty good for me and I don't begrudge the angels their share.

Thanks W Pappy. It's weird, but I don't really drink that much of it. Maybe a snort every day or so. Can't remember last time I sat down and had more than just a snort or two. :wtf:
I have a few other caches back in the hills that's been aging for a few years. I figure if the zombie apocalypse hits, I'll have plenty of trading material for whatever is needed. :shh:
I like once used barrels, but finding decent ones is a trick. There's a cooperage about 15 miles away that sells new charred barrels, but that's my plan for this summer. :D
The glass cider jugs and the 1/2 gal mason jars have always been my go to storage. I didn't trust plastic jugs before I found all the negatives on this site. I know folks that used to use new jerry cans for transport, but I wouldn't trust those for long term storage.
I've never even thought about corney kegs, but that may be a good option.
I don't care for used bottles for long term storage. They don't stack as well as mason jars. But for just keeping it in the house for sipping, I could see bottles being a pretty good option. Especially if the bottles are free.

Sass flatwoods put me onto the corney idea last year, good thing about the corney for you is that new setup ya got in the works
will kick ya out enough white dawg to fill em in no time. And ya can mix different woods in at the same time to get some really unique
flavors to come thru.

I don't have much problem with that. My younguns are a couple of pickle eating machines. I have a good collection of 1 gallon pickle jars and have started getting a few 1/2 gallon jars collected. I also have a lot of 1 gallon and 1/2 gallon jugs. I got most of the jugs at flea markets and thrift stores. My biggest problem seems to be getting some of them filled.

I like that idea. But does the metal from the corny keg influence the taste of the likker? Back when I drank beer, I could taste a noticeable difference between can beer and bottled beer. I have zero experience with corny kegs. Reckon I need to do a little research on corny kegs.

I think I like the glass so much because I can see the change in the color and imagine how the likker and the wood work together to bring out flavors, and it's just pretty to look at too.

If we can get rid of all this snow and ice, I can get back to work scrounging the parts to get that new outfit running.

Cornelius kegs are my best accessories! Would not want to work without one. And period. If you shoot a little gas to them and have a party tap then they also make excellent bottling tools.

I thought about the difference in materials and figure, for short term storage (less than 2 years), the SS would be fine.

Just another thing on my scrounging list...

If you guys want some 1 gallon glass pickle jars, make friends with the local deli owners. I have a guy that comes into my place for my jars buy he actually makes pickles...he's in Florida these months so I save them for my own use now. They usually have 5 gallon food grade plastic buckets too.

Most every mom and pop store around me makes subs and sandwiches. When the pickle jars are empty they rinse them out and sell them for 50¢. I buy hem anytime I see them.
