Amount of sugar?

Post by tolbers1 »

I have always used turbo yeast for my sugar washes. I now want to improve on taste and have decided to use a champagne yeast. With turbo yeast I was able to follow the directions on the package in regards of how much sugar to use. I can't find any information on the amount of sugar to use for a 5 gallon batch. Is there a specific amount I should use or should I check the SG? What is the acceptable SG reading I should shoot for?

I was thinking about doing just a simple sugar wash for a neutral spirit. So sugar, water, yeast.

Yeast need nutrients. Check out the tried and true section for a recipe. I would look at rads allbran, gerber. They are intended to be a replacement for turbos.

Try not to go much higher than 1.070 on the gravity - you want to aim for around 10% ABV, tops, for the best results.

And just use regular bakers yeast, it's cheaper, and does just fine.
