Brewhaus premium kettle vs keg.

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Brewhaus premium kettle vs keg.

Post by Spooled »

I'm torn between purchasing the brewhaus 15 gallon premium kettle and a 15 gallon keg conversion. Also I love the idea of adding the npt plug for drainage, but is there a real need to add additional 1" coupling/s? If I order one I want to make sure I'm covered for everything with this kettle. Also which is better in your opinions keg or kettle and why? Thanks for any input.

Wish I built a keg style unit. No TTB list to be on. All manufactures and retailers are required to provide a list of customers to the gov't types on demand.

I may or may not be on that list. But to be sure, build it yourself.

Buy a boiler and risk being put on a Watch List (and spend too much $$).
Make a boiler out of common items and nobody is the wiser but you (and likely spend less $$).

Simple, eh?

Keg won't unless it's purpose-built. But you knew that.

Thanks guys. I didn't think the boiler would put on the list. With all the stuff I've ordered for homebewing over the decades I'm probably on a list somewhere. I knew a column etc would put me on the list, I didn't think the boiler kettle would though because it could be for legal beer and wine production. That kettle sure is pretty, but as my Pop always told me pretty things bring trouble. Lol

Homebrewing is one thing, distillation is quite another.

If you look around...you can find new and/or used kegs from winery supply places. I've seen wine storage kegs (new) that have 4" ferrule in the top and a 1.5" one on the bottom that you could use for a drain. (there are ferrule to NPT adapters). Those wine supply places also have used kegs as well. And some of them have their own in-house welding/fab shop...that can do pretty much anything you want with a keg (put ferrules on where ever, etc) and do sano stainless welds. The time I did that...it was cheap too (to have them do it vs what local places wanted to do the fabrication only)

Just takes a bit of looking. Prices vary up and down. But, I would say you should be able to get a kegger...setup any way you want..shipped to you for the same price as that kettle plus, additional NPT shipped. Nothing against BH. They do decent fab work too. But, you'll definitely end up on a TTF list if you buy a boiler from them.

I just switched from a Keg to a 13 gallon Milk can boiler from Moonshine Distillers. According to them they have not been asked to supply names to the government yet but hopefully the home distillation bill will pass soon and it will be legal for all :) If you want a keg, I have one for sale now :)

What about something like this? Would it work?

I'm thinking that buying a milk can from a dairy supply place isn't putting me on any list, right?

To answer your question along with the drain port and the column opening I would add 2 additionalsl, a 1" 1/2 coupling to convert to electric and a 4" fill port at the top. You might also consider a spot at the top for a temp. gauge.
