Using different kegs for thump. Sac run?

Post by MooseKnuckle »

I am going to be using a new (to me) keg as a thump. I already have a 7.5 gal thump and a 13.2 gal boiler, and want to use a second 13.2 gal keg for steam distillation on the grain. My question is, do I need to go through the sac run business again or is this safe to use as it has been used to store alcohol obviously its entire service life and hasn't been modified in any way.

I am not looking to take any shortcuts and don't really want to be that guy... Just curious if it is more about soldering/welding or if a stainless keg is good to go. I have read threads on the cleaning runs, and have no problem doing it that way if need be, just didn't really find specific info about replacing a part without any sort of modifications done to it.

Just my 2 cents worth.
If the keg is virgin then I don't see a need to make a sacrificial run.

That was kind of what I was thinking, just wanted to make sure at least a few people agree with me lol

I concur, which, is agreeing.

For what my opinion is worth :)

As long as you didn't do any new soldering/welding on any of the components, it should be good to go.
Every new member should read this before doing anything else:

I was curious about a 13.2 gallon keg...so I did a Google search. This is what I found: http://buykegbeer.com/keg-sizes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I didn't know that the commercial 50-liter keg was actually 13.2 gallons...it never dawned on me (I never calculated the volume). Traditionally, I've encountered only 1/2 barrel kegs (besides Cornies, 1/4 barrels and even 1/6 barrels). So this "find" was enlightening.

As to your original question....I believe you may be "OK" without a follow on sacrificial run if you're only replacing the thumper and none of the rest of the system. No soldering or new (old) piping added.

yeah they the European ones, and apparently the two I just got, being guinnes kegs, are a different flange so I'll have to grind away some of the outside if I want to use them with my triclamp fittings, not to mention, cut 1/2" off the downtube going into my thump as it hits the bottom. so much for an easy swap...

Think I'm gonna grab a 15.5 gallon one and make one of these Guinness ones into a BOP for some steam heated mash cooking. Possibly give the other to my brother for the same purpose.... Wish I paid a little more attention when I picked them up but they just looked so damn nice and I love Guinness lol
