Tuna Fishing

Post by RandyMarshCT »

So I searched around for a while for a recent saltwater fishing post to add my pic to, but didn't see anything very recent. I had the excellent opportunity to go out on a 30 hour trip with the Canyon Runners over the past few days. It was totally awesome and I brought home a lot of fish. This is the first time I ever packed a freezer with fish... plenty of venison, sides of beef, and pigs have filled my chest freezer, but never tuna. We got a 180 lb Big eye, 4 decent yellow fin, 3 long fin, a very small mahi, and maybe or maybe not a swordfish that was 46" to 47" depending on how hard you pulled on it (47" is the min). I highly recommend these guys if you're looking for a canyon charter in the NY area. One of my biggest customers took us so we didn't have to pay, but I'm pretty sure it runs about $6000 (plus tip). The boat was 60 foot Ritchie Howell.

I was there about two weeks ago. All those sharks sure didn't slow anyone down from swimming in the ocean!

Fishing from surf was good. Sea mullet, crokers, and pompano were all there.
But what the heck do I know.....I am still learning.

I can't even imagine trying to hand-line one of these fish, even one of the 40 lb long-fins. Those guys are more man than me, that's for damn sure. That big eye dove straight down 5 times as soon as we got him up to the boat. Reel spinning so fast I'm surprised there wasn't smoke coming off of it. My old man tells me stories of the swordfish they caught in the 70's, upwards of 500+ lbs. The captain of the boat (Phil Dulanie) has a record (one of many) for catching 2 giant Bluefin over 1000 lbs in the same day. That was in the 70's too. It's hard for me to fathom fighting a fish like that. The big eye we caught took over 45 minutes to land. Had a couple of grown men completely exhausted. A 4+ hour fish battle would have wiped all 6 of us out. I never realized the beating it puts on your back.
