35 lbs of free Oreos

Post by NcGunny »

Was at the store today chatting with my buddy,he was filling up the cookie aisle. Had a cart load of Oreos which had expired, offered him 10.00 buxs for the cart but he said instead give him a bottle of the final Oreo product. Damn guys know me to well! Hopefully this turns out as good as the fruitloop did. Going to make 2 styles, cornmash and all Oreo depending on my SG may have to add some sugar. Thinking there is prolly a ton of grease in them. Any other ideas?

Oreos were using lard, but I think they use a hydrogenated vegetable fat now. Bring the cookie mash to a boil which will release the fats from the starch. If you have a way of cooling your mash down to almost freezing, say a walk in freezer, the fat will solidify on the top and you'll get 90% of it out, the starches should sink and give you a clean separation. Then proceed with the mash/ starch conversion. Tell us how it works! Kiwi Bruce

I have a purpose built chest freezer for cooling, i figured I would have to skim off the fats because the ingrediant list is loaded with fats.

All I can say is that I hate my phone..update from HTC messed with camera and pics are in some strange format stuck on SD card.... Anywho....Crushed up fifteen pounds of Oreos. Used a heavy mil sack and run em over with my yard roller. Chucked all the crumbs and goo into a 15 gallon kettle and started a slow cook. Once dissolved I let it cool and put it in the freezer,at midnight there was exactly 1inch of solid fats resting on the top, skimmed it off and then went to bed forgetting to take kettle out. I am now waiting for a Oreo block to unthaw.

Glade you have the freezer. When the cookie block thaws take a hydrometer reading and get a feel for the sugar content, it should be quite high. With this much starch to convert I'd use a pound of cracked malt, and let it work at a low temp at first around 140F for 30-40 minutes, then bring the temp up to 150 -158F and start iodine/starch testing. When it looks like you have close to a full conversion you can end it. Don't be to concerned about getting a 100% conversion, any fats left in the mash will shield some of the starches. Cool it off, check the pH and sugar content and adjust the pH to a 6 to 6.5 and the sugar to 10%, pitch some yeast. Your good to go.Kiwi Bruce

Update..Hydro reading was off the chart so I had to split the batch in half. Ended up using 1.2 lbs. of malt per batch and p.h. ended up around 6.2. Conversion is probably around 90%. Formed a really nice looking cap unlike the Fruitloop..lol
Bubblers are rattling away and the smell is almost like a bakery. Btw..I used a tad bit of Diammonium in one batch but I didnt notice a difference yet in activity.

Took a day for the DAP mash to quick in...that jug is all but jumping off the floor.Airlock is at a constant bubble and the non DAP is at a steady but slow bubble. I actually cant stand to be in the shed for long because the odor is just overpowering from the cookie. Real hope this makes a decent drop.

DAP should be finished by tommorrow, SG is hanging around 1.004. Very little sweetness to the taste and finger dippin dries non tacky. My other batch is still working away and far from complete. Been stirring in the cap when it forms, which brings me to the cap look. Kinda reminds me of outhouse pit!! Thinking this would make a great beer if someone was inclined to try it. The wash has a look of a very weak rum color. I am debating on how long this needs to settle due to this combo is screaming Scorch me! Prolly rack it off into a filter and let it sit awhile. The Oreos have turned into a sludge on the bottom that doesnt like movement.

Lol! Who the hell would want a thin Oreo? End up eatting twice as much at double the cost with prolly half the amount of a normal package. Marketing genius is right..and probably twice as bad for you. I remember the Milky Way Lite...had twice the calories and twice the sodium of a normal Milky Way..but people thought it was good for em. People are like sheep..I always said if I had enuf money I could make anybody president of the U.S.

Beat served with milk? Sounds like it's gonna be good. Wonder if there's an outlet for out of date cookies around here.

If you like it, there are diy oreo recipes that would be likely just as good if not better. Most center around flour, sugar, cocoa, vanilla, and butter. Sounds like a simple sugar head recipe minus the butter.

Never been a sugar head guy,but after the Fruitloops concotion I figured its time to expand my recipe.I gotta laugh when people think there is anything easy about this hobby. They see and taste the final product, but dont know how it got to that point. SOoo...bucket one is done. Finished out at 1.004 and dry, hoping the DAP didnt ruin it. Moved it to the fridge hoping to speed up the settling some. Anybody trying this should know the Oreo bed is a swirling silt like sludge :x Second bucket is still sweet and has a few days to go. Took a shot and you kinda know its flavor, but its hidden behind ..idk..first taste was a hint of chocolate but replaced by a creamy vanilla taste.

Can't wait to hear how this turns out. Especially I you get that hint of chocolate and creamy vanilla to carry over. Maybe aged with a bit of vanilla and coco bean to enhance? Good luck, keep us posted!

My prediction is that you will end up with a fairly dry, muted, vodka-like spirit with a hint of chocolatey/coffee and somewhat yeasty aftertaste. The vanilla will not make it over because it isn't volatile enough.
The still is not a liar. Mash and ferment quality is 99.9% of your performance.
