what do you guys pay for hay? we have had a dry spring and the hay farmers went from 70 bucks for a round last year to (asking) 200

its been wet for the last month though, so second cut is looking good.

I don't know if i'd pay 200 or start making horse sausage.

any truckers hauling hay to north central AB? I'd rather import than pay these opportunistic sOB's.

We've had the reverse of that quandry here . Rain every 3rd day at the least and we still have over half of our hay crop to make . Growth has been fantastic . No second cut will happen and if it continues raining on such a regular basis the east is going to see herd kills equal to the drougthstricken west .

Hells of fire $200 for a round bale.
It's going for $20-30 here for run of the mill grass hay and $50 for real good Bermuda.
I've been bush-hogging the pasture because it ain't cost effective to bale it.

They may not be so opportunistic . Several years back we had a serious druoght here and I found a good deal on a tractor/trailer load of hay in Toma , Wi . 1 thousand miles away from the home farm in WV . Offered the deal to my Dad who is a big mouth when he is drinking with his friends and he told them that I could get all this cheap hay from Wi to ease their pain .
Bad day in Blackrock when they all showed up to help unload and stack the hay I brought to Dad . The chickenshit bastards couldn't understand when they told me they needed 5 more loads like I brought my Dad and I told them those loads would cost them 4 times per load what I charged my Dad just for the fuel and the hay cost .
>Guess who tuned out to be the asshole in this deal . Yep , all of them , including my Dad decided that I was the asshole for refusing to help them out of my own pocket . Dad didn't consider the cheap hay I hauled to him for fuel expenses that got him through that winter .

a few farmers here have sold off the crop at a reasonable 30% increase. they are the ones that said,i did half the work i'll take half the money....the others are looking at supply and demand...you want it... i got it but i want 4x the money for half the work. thats just greed.

last year they wanted a bail out from the governement because it rained too much. this year they want a bailout because it didn't rain enough.

alls i can tell you is the government don't bail my business out when i have a bad year.

truckers don't get a fuel subsidy when the oil co's get greedy and the rate gets cut by "competitors" i'm sure you know...they still got the expenses insurance, fuel and wear and tear and a family to feed...thats why i'd rather support an honest farmer and an honest trucker...instead of one greedy farmer for the same money.

I don't buy hay but my friend that owns the cabin on the island I stay at has a son-in-law that buys and sells hay worldwide so if you want I can get you a price. He lives in Eastern Washington so he isn't that far below where you live.

I was quoted $150 for second, but the rain killed that crop, no telling if I have to pay a premium now or what. When I find a supplier I stick with him and ride out the cost fluxuations.

SLTM, there are people in wyoming (and i'm sure other places) that will land a B-train here for not much more than that. 40 bales, so it's a lot of feed....but you are about 10 hours closer to wyoming than i am so that should save well over a grand on a load.

Thanks bushman, but i just have to wait a few more weeks for the second cut to come in. there is lots standing, just need a dry week to bring it in and the gouging should come to an end. i hope.

HDNB....Crap, sorry for the mistake, here we call alfalfa "hay". The last actual hay I bought was 20 yrs ago when I lived in Oregon at around $40 per ton.

Here it depends on what kind of hay, I just bought 40 big squares for $35 each. That's for hay grazer, we've had an abundance of rain and there's plenty of hay. My pasture is belly deep on my cows right now, I will only be supplementing them later in the winter. They love hay grazer. Wish you luck friend. We were in a drought since 2011, I had to sell my herd, hay was anywhere from 110-200 a round. I sold early, saw it coming and got descent money, those poor ranchers that tried to hold out lost their respective asses. Not many cattle left here, but our herd is growing. Record prices for cattle here. Just a thought but it might be worth the shipping to send some to Oklahoma or Texas and sell them as to feed them.
