Reusing rum feints

Post by rumbo »

Hi guys,
Just wanting to get a bit of feedback on what people are doing with rum feints. I'm wondering how many people keep putting the tails (rum oils) back into one of the stripping runs for the next batch. Also am wondering how many people keep putting the heads back in. Also how many are not putting either back in and keeping them all separate for a separate reflux run and therefore not wasting them. I am using "head" and "tails" rather than feints because I know there are people that call tails feints and people that call feints the heads + tails together.

I have tried reusing the tails but over time it seems to me that the tails are slowly creeping further back into the hearts so I have to continually cut off earlier and I honestly can't taste any improvement over time. I don't really understand what this achieves. People say the oils accumulate over time and the flavour comes back into the hearts, but how much different is this to just cutting off a little later into the tails. Also surely there must be an end point to doing this. You are taking out a certain amount of these compounds based on where you make your cuts, but surely there will still be a very large accumulation of these compounds over time which will become overwhelming.

Adding heads back in (less the foreshots) seems to make the spirit run very long with lots of heads coming back out.

BTW, I am using ferments which have about 25% backset in them, doing a stripping run and then a spirit run through a pot still.

Thanks for any feedback.
