Greetings from California

Post by m314 »

Hello everyone. :) I'm yet another newbie in the world of distillation. I've been reading / lurking here for a while now.

I brewed my first batch of beer last month. I bought a home brewing kit with ingredients for an IPA. It turned out awesome, better than I expected. I've been working on my first batch of cider over the past couple weeks. It has been fun too. Distillation seems like the next logical step for an alcohol enthusiast like me.

I'm planning on buying a pot still in the near future to start making my own rum, whiskey, and apple brandy. I also need a reflux still to make neutral spirits for my herbal tinctures. I'm looking forward to learning from the experienced members here and posting about my experiences.

Welcome to the forums. The links in my signature will give you a good start here. After the required reading, take a look at the "Tried and True Recipes" section for the best collection of recipes you'll find anywhere.

Good luck to you and stay safe.

Hello and welcome to HD, this is a great place to learn the art of hobby distilling. With the required reading and research you will find that building your own still properly will be more efficient and sometimes a lot cheaper than a store bought one. Buying from a still from a store for me would raise a red flag. Having a paper trail with your name on it for everyone to see ( not good). Have fun and be safe

Welcome from another Californian! Start reading crankys a little spoon feeding for new distillers. It's located in novices right at the top. This post gives valuable information to help you get right into this great hobby. Enjoy the forums!

Thanks for the advice. :) I need to spend more time reading before I start my first run. This place is a great source of information.

Right now I have more money than space and free time. Buying my first still seems like it would save time. The "advice for newbies, by a newbie" thread also recommended that newbies learn how to build their own. It makes sense that if I build one myself I'll have a deeper understanding of how it works.

I too was in your shoes a while back... Take your time and read what interests you... But certainly take the time to grab a POT of coffee and read Cranky's spoonfeeding link in my signature..

As far as buying a still.. Please take the time to read the plus and minuses of this decision..... Iffin you make your own you not only get the satisfaction and knowledge but you are NOT on the LIST being compiled by the FEDS.!!! Certainly your decision to be on that radar if you choose.

Not sure what your taste in likker is but a pot still can be built for less than $75 and will make a mighty fine drop.... Plus it will prove to you that you can take care of learnin the details to take care of yourself !!

Carry On
