That's one of the reasons I always leave what I think is the first hearts jar and first tails jar out when I blend, then I come back the next day and try them again and most of the time they go to the feints jar. I agree about the URRV, it's good stuff but tricky to get the cuts right. Yesterday I found a bit of it I did last year. It's good stuff but I honestly believe I liked it better young.S-Cackalacky wrote: Oh, I think I know what a shitty heads cut taste like, but usually only after the fact. Just finished blending up 2 gallons of Lemoncello and had a little left over. I said self you should drink this and not waste filling a small jar only half full. It was a good thought.

Drinking a "raspberry syrup" that for sure isn't what the bottle says it is. Whiskey made by good old HDNB. And cigars. They will have to wait until tomorrow!

Re: What is everyone drinking?
The Timehop app on my phone let me know this afternoon that I bottled up a batch of Kriek and a batch of Chocolate Doppelbock one year ago today.
I really hadn't liked the doppel even after 6 months, but today it's a completely different beer. The cocoa has mellowed, and while it used to be almost dry and bitter (which can be good with chocolate), it had sweetened up a little bit and was really tasty.
Tomorrow I'll bust into the Kriek, but what I'm really looking forward to is blending the two into a chocolate-covered cherry.

Re: What is everyone drinking?
S3 from the barrel. Damn near a year old and quite tasty. The corn has really come forward followed with nose and palate by the barley. Of course the rye and smoke are there but they have both mellowed into a very pleasant finish.
Amazing what time on the wood will do. Sweet followed by spice and the most unique smoke I have ever experienced.
Had my doubts at first about this cottonwood smoke but now WOW!
When I first put this in the barrel I would have said never again with the cottonwood. At 6 months and at the S3 meeting I would have said never again. Now I see barrels in my future. Next to my Bentfinger Bourbon my new favorite.

Re: What is everyone drinking?
Happy to hear that, but not surprised. I remember that cottonwood being a little wild and raw, but I figured that would settle down with some time and become an interesting brew.woodshed wrote:Had my doubts at first about this cottonwood smoke but now WOW!
Glad to hear it has, I bet it is a very interesting whiskey now. I would also bet something similar has happened with Brutal's dark rye whiskey, I would guess that roasty rye has mellowed a bit into something very nice.
Looking forward to an annual tasting next summer!

Im enjoying a nice pour of Flatwoods Jackass Juice Circa 2012. Very nice, smooth sweet and a bit fruity.

Desthil "Here Gose Nothing" on tap, run through a beer Randall stuffed full of rum soaked blueberries.
Actually only half as crazy as it sounds, quite good.

Picked up a bottle of 'Beer Barrel Bourbon' from New Holland in Michigan. Its aged for 'several years' in a new bourbon barrel, and then finished in a barrel that aged their Dragons Milk Stout. Its..... f'in gooood. Very smooth, no heads bite, a little subtle sumthin sumthin from the Stout barrel. High scores for this one, they did it right. Recommend if you see it try it.

I've found the same with Jameson that is finished in a stout cask, I find it gives a bit of body and a warmness that's not there is the normal bottle.
