Veterans
Today, in the U.S. (and in the Republic of Texas ), it is Veterans Day. A day set aside on the calendar for the rememberance of those who have honorably served in our military.
Often lost in the tradition is the rememberance of the Veterans other Countries.
Today my hat is off to any and all of you who are reading this, who have honorably served your Country by Military Service. No greater gift can one give to his people.
A quote for the day:
When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep? ~George Canning

Re: Veterans
We had Remembrance Day yesteday.
11th day of the 11th month at 11 am we give our thoughts and thanks to those who served to protect us in WW1.
It's our special day to remember the diggers and give thanks for their bravery and honour facing the probability of losing their lives to protect their loved ones and the independence and way of life we value.

Re: Veterans
It's Remembrance Day in Canada as well.
I find it sad that observing this day is becoming less and less important to some people. Stores are open, business as usual. Alot of the men and women that fought for freedom and are still alive are having to witness people forgeting the sacrifices that they and so many others have made and continue to make.
Can't the world sit quiet for one day?

Re: Veterans
Yesterday was Armistice Day (remberance Day as it called now) here in Oz and every time I do the service at our town cenotaph I'm surprised at the increased numbers in attendance. There are the usual old diggers but we are getting more and more younger folk, plus this year we had all the kids from both primary schools and a platoon of trainee officers from the Military College at Duntroon who do exercises in town every year prior to graduating. This seems to be the pattern in Oz.
Hopefully, they are there to honour the dead soldiers but more importantly, to think about the horrors of war and to fight against future stupid, unnessesary wars. The sooner our troops return from Iran and Iraq the happier I - and many others - will be. Thanks for raising this day in here, butch.

This is a photo i took of a light horseman at Malabar Riflerange after the Malabar RSL remembrance at memorial.
As we remember those who have fallen in combat fighting for there country, we honour and salute them now and take time to reflect upon their bravery and courage, lest we forget.
Thanks to the History chanel and the disclosure of hundreds of reals of film and photos, hiden away by governments, we can all watch and just imagine the hardships and terror they had to endure.
War and fighting has been a part of human existancefor thousands of years that have been forgoten after 1 or 2 generations, its only due to the invention of photograpy and film in the late 1800's that it has been made possible to capture in time the attrocitys and terrors of two of the posibly bigest conflicts in the world.
it is in our own intrest to remember and pass on what we dont want to happen again.
cheers.

Re: Veterans
I too would like to salute and thank all those who've served.
We had our Veterans Day Parade in the village today. A young Marine whose unit recently returned from duty in Iraq was home for a bit of leave. He marched in his dress uniform at the head of the parade. His mother is very happy he's home, and safe.
To all the troops, men and women, we wish you a swift return to your loved ones, safe and sound, in body and mind.

97 years ago today the armistice was implemented to end the great war. We observe a minute of silence at 11 o'clock, guess everyone does
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest we forget

Crow, nice tribute to those brave souls. The greatness of a nation can only be measured by its citizen's willingness to sacrifice everything to protect it. It's a time to remember those sacrifices.

Let's take this day to celebrate those who sacrifice so much for our safety and security...and a moment to curse the tyrants who would send our children to harms way on a lie. Let us all remind those who gained financially from the sacrifices of others that repayment should be more than constant cutbacks to what is already dismal support.
Support our troops who willingly give their lives, not the politicians who take them with no remorse!
(Sorry for the rant, but it sickens me to watch politicians use a day like today to further their career while doing everything possible to screw vets out of what they earned.)

Re: Veterans
I have a Son who is a veteran of the war in Iraq.... Ramadi and Fallujah to be exact. He was lucky to make it back home; he saw and experienced a lot and it has affected him still yet. Shot in the back but the bullet hit the ceramic plate in the ballistic vest dead center....he was knocked unconscious but....
Have another Son who is a Captain in the US Army at present. Did a tour in Afghanistan and said he didn't think he would ever make it home from that. But he is in a "Hi Speed" unit and is on the way BACK to......... Tomorrow.
This stuff is hard on parents as well as the Soldiers who may give the ultimate sacrifice.
We who are left at home are always waiting for THE phone call or watching for the Government car to pull up in the driveway.
Pray for YOUR Soldiers on veterans day....they need all the help you can get.

Re: Veterans
I spent alot of time in ramadi, its a crap hole. While they do need our support they really need socks and nicotine. Perhaps some special "water" or "mouthwash" is always nice to get. I spent alot if time at the fob where the tobasco bottle full of sand is.

Re: Veterans
I thank and salute All our veterans this day and every day. There is a Monument to VietNam, Laos called the Soldier Stone that is almost unknown (by design) It was placed to remember ALL Nations soldiers. It is high in the Rockies of central Colorado. No directions nor makers lead to it. In a small grove of Pines in a beautiful high meadow. It sits undisturbed with many reverent tokens left by people that have stumbled upon it. Cattle, deer, elk and pine squirrels graze around. It doesn't glorify war just acknowledges it. Hard to explain. It can be a healing place. Anyone that might need or desire this PM me. Would be honored to lead or direct anyone to this sight. I couldn't upload picture..sorry.

The Nippon Army had every intention of invading Australia and then New Zealand, they had plans, occupational money printed maps with re-named towns and cities and how it was all to be administered, we were on their shit list make no mistake about that. Now my paternal Grandfather was refused oversees service due to a cataract leaving him blind in one eye so he was sent to defend Darwin about 1941. Relatively safe posting for that time you might have thought, yeah, not so much. On the 19th of Feb 1942 Australia copped its first of 97 bombing raids at Darwin, by wars end that city was blown to pieces and at least a dozen other towns were damaged. Thing is England was not in a position to offer much assistance being hard pressed herself and so it was the Americans who stepped up to the plate and came to our aid and without that that help though shear weight of numbers we would have been hard pressed to hold the menace back. Things could have turned out very different and our history could have been much grimmer. We can all smile and take the piss out of yanks for sure but old friends are the best friends and that's best not forgotten

Re: Veterans
All veterans have my respect all days off the year. Anyone who's served is a certified badass in my opinion and I, for one, an appalled at my countries failure to care for those who have served. The homeless rate, the unchecked suicide rate and the joke they call the VA are just a few things that disgust me. Pay to transport and house 10,000 Syrian refugees? There's plenty of American heroes we need to take care of first.
