Almost newbie from the Great Lakes

Post by Ridgeville Runner »

Been following the forums for more than 1 year after reading for months. Built a 15.5 gallon pot still with 2in copper column with a 3/4 over 1/2 lieberg.
Did the cleaning runs last December in the garage using propane, damn near froze my arse off with an 18 degree temp and howling winds.
Liking bourbon, I followed Jimbos recipe, boy that mash smelled great. Back to the freezing garage for the first stripping got me thinking about Jimbos electric conversion, you're the man Jimbo. Gathered all the parts and did the next 2 stripping runs in the basement, what a difference that made and so easy compared to propane.
Spirit run came out great yielding 3 quarts after many hours doing cuts of 142 proof very smooth white dog.
Stripped some white oak heart out of a dead tree branch from the back yard, followed the toasting instructions, taste great but might be a little smokey, everyone says it taste great though.
Just finished a spirit run of 3 strip this time grinding the corn to a corn meal and using enzymes. Aired out 27 pints and now have to find time to do the cuts. All smell pretty good and I can't believe how sweet they all taste, 8 pints of tails are sweet but smell terrible.
Very thankful for this website and all the great people.

Welcome Ridgeville Runner,
Enjoy the forums. Save those nasty tails. When ran through a reflux column they make an awesome neutral. I just ran 12 gallons of tails and got 4 gallons of really clean 185 proof spirit with the same set up you have except I clamp on a CCVM column to my pot
when doing a reflux run. All my tails were from multiple UJSSM runs collected down to 20%.
Enjoy the ride

+1 on what grasshopper said. I ran an all feints pot stilled (not neutral) for a "mutt" whiskey. Rum, bourbon, apple brandy, sugarhead, and other feints. Oaked some and some on fruit. Turned out pretty tasty! Welcome to the forum.

I love working with metal and this hobby so much that I plan on making another column or two. Being close to retirement I need something to do and stay out of the wife's way,LOL. She wondered why I'd start this as I don't drink this kind of stuff but I told her why not.
After visiting a few distilleries in Bardstown, KY this fall she is on board now,she likes making wine but I really don't care drinking it.
Now she wants to help do the cuts and get this last batch on oak.
It's good to have a good wife[WHITE SMILING FACE]
